The uses of definite article The 1. The is placed before the name of a river, sea , ocean , gulf. Such as- The Pacific is the deepest ocean. The Mediterranean is situated in the middle east. The Surma is the longest river of Bangladesh. The Bay of Bengal is in the south of Bangladesh. 2. The is placed before the name of a range of mountains, archipelago, table land , desert etc. such as- The Andamans are to the south of India. The Himalayans are in Nepal. The Sahara is the biggest desert. 3. The is placed before the name of a famous ship, hotel, museum , etc. Such as- The Pan Pacific Sonargaon is a multinational hotel. The Titanic sank in 1912 A.D. 4. The is placed before the name of a holy religious book, newspaper and epic. Such as- She reads the Quran daily. I read the Daily Star .The Meghnad Bodh is an epic. 5. The is placed before the name of a train, aeroplane , space shuttle and famous palace. Such as-The Appollo-11 was commanded by Neil Armstrong. The Paharika Express went to Dhaka last night. The Boeing 707 is a luxurious aeroplane . The Tajmahal is one of the greatest wonders of the world.
The uses of definite article The 6. The is placed before the name of an unique object. Such as The sun rises in the east. The moon lights at night. 7. The is placed before the meaningful geographic name . Such as- My uncle lives in the U.S.A. 8. The is placed before the name of a comparative and superlative degree of adjective . Such as- This is the better of the two. He is the best boy in the class. 9. The is placed before the name of a plural family. Such as- The Pals, the Sens , the Mughals, the khans . 10. The is placed before the name of a singular designation. Sheikh Hasina is the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. 11. The is placed before adjective to specify proper noun. Such as- The virtuous Mohsin pardoned the thief. 12. The is placed before the name of a famous historic place. Such as- Sirajuddaulah was defeated in the Battle of Polashy. 13. The is placed before the name of a collective noun used as plural noun. Such as- The majority must be granted. The public have supported him. The police have arrested him.
The uses of definite article The 14. The is placed before the name of a nation. Such as- The English are a brave nation. 15. The is placed before the name of a date. Such as- The 16th December is our Victory Day. 16. The is placed before the comparative degree to mean the more-the more( - ) Such as- The sooner, the better. 17. The is placed before that kind of noun which means an occupation. Such as- He joined the army. 18. The is placed before the name of a musical instrument when it means playing. Such as- He plays the piano . But it means no playing then the will not be before that instrument. Such as- I have a flute . 19. The is placed before some collective noun. Such as- The elite, the peasantry, the audience etc. 20. The is placed before ordinal number written by letter but the will not be placed before ordinal number written by Roman figure but the has to be read at the time of reading . Such as-Omar the second Omar .
