  5. DARPA VPR/VCR Summit August 25, 9am-12pm ET RSVP required The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which identifies and pursues high-risk, high-payoff research initiatives across a broad spectrum of science and engineering disciplines, is hosting a virtual summit for vice chancellors and vice presidents of research. The event is designed to familiarize potential proposers with the mission, research areas of interest, and business processes pursued by DARPA, a Department of Defense agency with a history reshaping existing technical fields, creating entirely new disciplines, and of transforming bold, paradigm-challenging initiatives into revolutionary capabilities for U.S. national security. The VPR/VCR Summit will feature presentations from the acting director of DARPA, Dr. Peter Highnam, as well as four of the agency s six office directors, who will detail their strategic priorities and associated opportunities for funding. Please RSVP to Jared Adams, DARPA's Communications Chief at jared.adams@darpa.mil.

  6. Workshop Series on Forecasting Data Costs for Researchers, Funders, and Storage Providers August 13, 20, and 27 Join the National Academies for a webinar series this August that will focus on data preservation approaches for research communities, funding organizations, and data storage providers. These webinars will explore in greater depth the cost framework presented in our recent report, Life Cycle Decisions for Biomedical Data: The Challenge of Forecasting Costs. Thursday, Aug 13, 12-1pm EDT: Data Costs for Researchers Speakers will discuss how researchers can plan for the life cycle of their data and how to create an environment conducive to cost forecasting of sustainable data management. Thursday, Aug 20, 12-1pm EDT: Data Costs for Funding Organizations Speakers will address how research funders can encourage and foster sustainable data management practices. Thursday, Aug 27, 12-1pm EDT: Data Costs for Storage Providers Speakers will discuss how scientific data storage providers can help make data more discoverable, aid in the development and adoption of data and metadata standardization and best practices, and help users better understand their storage options.
