  2. 1. Contextual Update 1.1. Drought The Drought situation in Afar , Amhara and Tigray region have been worsening in most woreda of the regions Pasture and water become depleted Pastoralist are moving to riverain areas for search of water and pasture Livestock body become Emaciated in the regions Afar region: Livestock migration has been observed in Elidar, Kori, Erebti, Garani, and Mille woredas due to drought, as animals search for pasture and water in neighboring areas. Approximately 36,293 households require emergency livestock feed support to mitigate the effects of the drought for their core breeding animals. 2

Contextual Update Amhara region : 2,427,688 cattle, and shoats exposed for sever starvation and poor body condition,and more than 4 million people need urgent relief food ( including IDPS) and more than 1 036,000 peoples are under a shortage of drinking water. Tigray region : More than 1 Million people severely affected in Tigray region by current drought 1.2.Flood Impact In Somale region In Oct- Nov 23, flood affected about 176,963 HHs of which 66,810 HHs were displaced, 41 Human Death related to floods and heavy rains reported , A total of 19,822 livestock died ,94,191 Hectares of crop damaged 1.3. Weather Condition Over the past two weeks there was unseasonal rain in some areas of South Ethiopia & Sidama regions. The rain had a positive effect for refilling of ponds & rejuvenation of pasture in pastoral & Agro pastoral areas and Minimal rain in some areas of Arsi , East Bale and East showa Zones ) of Oromia region reported 3

  4. 1. Contextual Update 1.4 . Crop production and harvest Except lately planted meher crops, currently harvesting of meher crops in most regions ( Amhara , Oromia , southern Ethiopia ,Afar and Somale )completed. However, irrigated wheat & vegetables are found at vegetative growth stage ( Oromia , Afar and southern region ) . Belg seasonal farming activities started in Borena , East Borena , Arsi and East Hararighe Zones of Oromia region , 112 hector of land prepared in the afromentioned zones for belg production, and the region planned to plant 1.2 million hector of land and 28.2 million qtl production in belg production season In Somale region poor crop harvest and pasture in Siti and Fafan zones due to below normal performance of September 2023 rains resulted in High food price due to the low production of crops, increased currency exchange and other aggravating factors. 4

Contextual Update 1.4 Livestock condition Due to the current drought the livestock body condition severely affected and Emaciated in Afar , Amhara and Tigray region but the livestock body condition in southern region , Oromia and Somale regions were improved due to availability of water and pasture, except Northern part of Somali Region and some areas (Kelafo) in Shebelle zone Livestock disease outbreak not reported in 5 regions but in Somale region Livestock diseases outbreak reported in several woredas of different zones (CCPP, SGP, Camel Pox, PPR, biting flies infestation, Abortion in camels and small ruminants) In Somale region death of livestock was reported (camel and small ruminants) due to the disease outbreak 5

  8. Key Challenges and way forward The drought situation has reached a severe level in Amhara , Afar and Tigray , it need urgent humanitarian support. However, the response has been inadequate High market inflation is prevalent across all woredas of the regions . Inadequate funding in Agriculture sector Limited access to vegetable, cereal, and pasture seeds is a significant challenge, as these seeds are essential for the upcoming Belg and Meher seasons.( Tigray and other regions ) Insufficient supply of Agro-chemicals for irrigation, which poses a threat to the success of the irrigation season ( Tigray , Afar) Most of the returnees couldn t engage in agricultural activities due to Agricultural inputs shortage ( Amhara ) Internet and other communication channel problem in Amhara region 8
