The Psychology Department at Lake Tahoe Community College has seen significant growth and development, particularly in distance education offerings. The department has strategically managed enrollment, developed a pool of high-quality adjuncts, and enhanced online course offerings to meet demand. Despite success rates for face-to-face and distance education courses, there is a proposal to enhance online psychology courses further to ensure compliance and sustain department growth.

History The Psychology Department has undergone significant changes the past seven years. The most substantive change has been the development and growth of substantial distance education (DE) offerings as part of the regular schedule and delivered curriculum. Total FTES generated by the department has grown from 48.035 in AY 2007-08 to 82.382 in AY 2011-12 with a decline to 66.31 in AY 2013-14 2013-2014 AY the Psychology Department Awarded eleven degrees

Growth Assumptions The growth in the department has been the result of several factors, including Strategic enrollment and section management; Development of a consistent, high quality pool of adjuncts; Development of high quality online course offerings that meet degree requirements; Increased demand for transferable general education courses. Curriculum growth and development has attended these efforts in order to meet demand for distance education and hybrid courses, while maintaining needed and valuable face-to-face offerings.

Proposal However, there are several factors that potentially limit the effectiveness of the online courses offered. Included among these factors is the absence of an online psychology degree, which will be remedied with more online psychology courses being offered. Completing online curriculum for all Psychology course offerings; Updating the current online curriculum for all Psychology courses to ensure compliance with quality guidelines specified in the LTCC Rubric for Quality Instruction adopted by the LTCC Academic Senate in 2012; Lay the groundwork for the continued growth and sustainability of the Psychology Department as a whole.
Psy 211: Research Methods and Design So what s the hold up? Psy 211 has a lab component Up until recently Research Methods with a lab was not offered in the online format. Discussed Foothill/DeAnza s implementation of their online methods course. Still it s availability to students is minimal. The road block to student success.

Outcome of the PDL Improvement in the quality of online instruction provided to the students of LTCC, to maintain a competitive advantage in the online education marketplace; Increased access to essential coursework and curriculum in Psychology through distance education that will allow students to complete the Associate s Degree for Transfer (ADT) in Psychology.
