The Foyle Foundation, based in London, funds various grant programs supporting arts, learning charities, and school libraries across the UK. They offer Main Grants Scheme for core remits of Arts or Learning, a Small Grants Scheme for smaller charities, and focus on funding projects that promote financial stability, essential equipment, freelance artists, and efficiency savings. The Foundation emphasizes one-year grants to eligible organizations, with grants ranging from 1,000 to 50,000 pounds. Common issues with applications include unclear financial explanations and lack of project justification.

  1. The Foyle Foundation Nicola Phillips Head of Grants and Operations

  2. London based but funds across the UK Awards about 9M in grants per year Grant Programmes Grant Programmes Main Grants Scheme Arts and Learning charities (including a major capital scheme) Small Grants Scheme for charities with a turnover of up to 150K per annum. Arts and Learning charities are also welcome to apply to Small Grants Scheme Foyle School Library Scheme

  3. Main Grants Scheme Main Grants Scheme Supports charities with a core remit of Arts or Learning operating in the United Kingdom This includes registered charities, CIOs, exempt charities, state schools and special needs schools. We welcome applications from across the country and particularly encourage applications from all areas outside London and the South East.

  4. What we will consider funding Main Grants Our focus has changed to making one-year grants only (no multi-year grants) to charities that can demonstrate ongoing financial stability for the next 12 months from the date of their application. More grants to cover core costs, favouring those with no, or without significant, public funding. Grants to cover essential equipment or re-equipping to enable ongoing service provision, delivery of on-line digital services and education work. Grants to enable minor works, or fund equipment, to enable social distancing within buildings. Projects/schemes that employ or support skilled freelance and independent artists and practitioners. Capital projects Projects/proposals that help reduce fixed or variable costs to promote efficiency savings, or which enable the generation of higher income, or additional revenue streams. Majority of grants 10K to 50K.

  5. Small Grants Scheme The Foundation s Small Grants Scheme is a responsive and flexible scheme offering grants between 1,000 - 10,000 to charities with a turnover of less than 150K pa. Charities need to be able to explain how they will be financially viable over the twelve months from the date of their application. Can consider core funding, equipment, projects Can consider applications for capital projects, but project needs to be at a late stage with fundraising and have an estimated start date for works Need to demonstrate how grant will make a significant difference 227 grants were awarded in 2019 and the average grant awarded is 4K

  6. Common Issues with Applications Have not fully demonstrated need for the project Value for money (e.g. high cost project, low number of beneficiaries) Budget does not add up or make sense (unclear justification for projections) Haven t fully explained financial situation (e.g. have high reserves due to a percentage of reserves being designated for future capital project, recent loss of key funder) Applications not explained clearly. Avoid acronyms (or explain what they stand for) Concerns regarding sustainability

  7. Common Issues with Applications Insufficient time to process application before start of activities (the Foundation does not award funding retrospectively) Missing information Does not fit objectives of the applying charity (might be an interesting proposal, but it does not meet the objectives of the applying charity and does little to support their ongoing work and future plans) Limited legacy from project for participants and/or applying charity Over ambitious (For example expensive and far reaching project by new and low turnover charity with little track record) Assumed knowledge - We will do research beyond the application form, but it helps when the applicant provides a clear picture of what the charity does, local issues, the objectives of the project and the need for funding

  8. Overview Read the guidelines carefully Please ask us questions if unsure Ensure that the Trustees and Management Team are supportive of the application Make a clear case for why funding is needed Be clear about the expected outcomes from receiving funding Ensure you have allowed adequate time for the Foundation to process the request and also allowed sufficient time to use funding effectively if approved Be realistic. Unfortunately regardless of how well written an application is, the Foundation receives a high volume of applications and Trustees have to make difficult decisions.

  9. Online application (links on website) Rolling programme no deadlines. Can take up to 4 months to receive a decision (6 months for major capital requests over 75,000). If unsuccessful the grants team are happy to provide feedback on the application.
