Insights from Northants Police Chaplaincy Survey Conducted in May 2018
Survey conducted among Northants Police personnel revealed high awareness of chaplaincy services, with a strong desire for more understanding and visibility of the roles. Plans include dispelling misconceptions, increasing chaplain visibility through articles and films, and rebranding chaplains. It was noted that chaplaincy can often be viewed as religious, emphasizing the need to consistently promote its diversity and support from senior management.

RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS ASKED Did you know there was a chaplaincy service? 96% Have you seen or met a chaplain? 90% Have you spoken to a chaplain? 86% Would you seek out a chaplain? No: 65% Yes: 35% Do you know how to contact a chaplain? No: 43% Yes: 57%
BREAKDOWN OF RESPONSES TO Q4 Would you seek out a chaplain: Yes 35% No 65% Of the 150 (approx) who replied No the free text field revealed: 85 would prefer to talk to friends/family/colleagues/manager/CiC/Fed/Unison 40 expressed views that misunderstood chaplaincy (religion) 15 didn t know what chaplaincy provided 10 thought that chaplains didn t understand the job 10 didn t see their chaplain enough to build trust

Intention is to myth bust the religion bit by showing background of chaplains TALKING HEADS: Short films with three chaplains 1 to myth bust the religion bit 1 to myth bust don t understand the job 1 to clarify what chaplaincy can deliver
MORE PLANS IN PLACE Chaplains to be rebadged as Northants Police and NFRS CHAPLAIN on back of polo shirts Extra funding committed by OPCC to allow for more visits to units by the two lead chaplains and more attendance at training events and other gatherings of staff New CC (ex RN and ex GMP shooting) gets chaplaincy
LESSONS WE HAVE LEARNT CHAPLAINCY CAN BE SEEN AS TO DO WITH RELIGION EVEN WHEN IT IS WIDELY PUBLICISED AS BEING FOR THOSE OF ALL FAITHS AND THOSE OF NONE THE IDEA OF RELIGION IS OFF-PUTTING WHICH IN ITSELF IS CHALLENGING VISIBILITY IS VITAL WITH THE CHURN/SHIFTS/LACK OF VOLUNTEER TIME THE ROLE OF CHAPLAINCY AND ITS USP HAS TO BE PUBLICISED AGAIN . AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN COMMITMENT FROM SENIOR MANAGEMENT SETS THE SCENE
