  3. P.2a Practice rATA with case study 1 Dan is a 12 year old Australian boy with a complex mix of learning difficulties and Autism Spectrum Disorder. His behaviour and symptoms change a lot. It s not really clear why. Sometimes he is able to join mainstream classes at school with only minor assistance from his teacher s aid. Other times, he needs to take time out from the class in a quiet place. He finds certain YouTube videos (about Lego and some mathematics lessons) to be very calming. His family is required to pay for his iPad. There is no funding for iPads in the Australian system, and his family finds it very difficult to replace them every year or so Dan does his best to take care of his iPad, but they don t last very long. Dan also uses 3 pairs of glasses. One stays at school, the other in his Dad s backpack, and one pair is a spare. He often breaks them. He goes through about 6 pairs a year. They re not expensive, but they add up, and there is no subsidy. Ever since he was a baby, Dan has loved riding in his Dad s bicycle trailer. He finds this really calming. Even if the weather is bad, Dan loves his bike trailer. Dan s family was able to get this trailer from an Australian scheme called the National Disability Insurance Scheme because it was assessed to be a therapeutic product.
