Previous papers have asked about: The role of Nora, Cassie, Marie and Deirdre Central theme The relationship between Marie and Cassie The role of a male character Challenges faced by the characters Dramatic techniques such as Characterisation Setting Stage directions Lighting changes Monologues Cross conversations

  3. Marking breakdown: 2 marks: - for identifying elements of commonality i.e what is the question asking you to discuss in this extract and elsewhere in the play. e.g. (setting, stage directions, themes, character development, use of monologues...) Another 2 marks: will be given for QUOTING AND COMMENTING ON A RELEVANT REFERENCE from the given extract which demonstrates what they are looking for. The remaining 4 marks: will be given for doing the same again (TWICE) from another part of the play (not the extract in the paper).

  4. Sample 8 mark questions Read page 12 from: NORA There s buses burning all along the falls. To: Page 14 Lights revert to normal Refer to this extract and at least two others from elsewhere in the play. 1. Marie is remembering a past memory. Discuss how important this and other memories are and why the Bold Girls remember past events? 2. Discuss the Bold Girls response to the troubles? 3. Discuss the role of Deirdre in this extract and elsewhere in the play.

  5. PRACTICE QUESTIONS: 1. Comment on the development of any one main character in the play 2. Comment on the relationship between any two of the main characters in the play 3. Comment on the importance of any one central theme 4. Comment on the influence of one of the male characters on the text 5. Comment on Deirdre s influence upon the other characters in the play 6. Comment on the use of any two dramatic techniques employed throughout the play
