Mocking the King of Kings (Matthew 27:27-44)
Mocking the King of Kings * The King is mocked by the world. (27:27-38)
- Know that the world has violently rejected Jesus as King and will mock him.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. (John 1:10-11)
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. (John 3:19-20)
- Know that the world has violently rejected Jesus as King and will mock him. - Remember that Jesus' kingdom is not of this world.
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world. 37 Then Pilate said to him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice. 38 Pilate said to him, What is truth? (John 18:36-38)
- Know that the world has violently rejected Jesus as King and will mock him. - Remember that Jesus' kingdom is not of this world. - Realize that living for this world alone mocks the King.
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life is not from the Father but is from the world. (1 John 2:15-16)
20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:20)

- Recognize that you are not as good as you think you are. - Realize that your good deeds are not enough.
6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. (Isaiah 64:6)
20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20)
- Recognize that you are not as good as you think you are. - Realize that your good deeds are not enough. - Repent of religiosity and self-righteousness that mocks the King.
1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. (Romans 10:1-4)
21 Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name? 23 And then will I declare to them, I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness. (Matthew 7:21-23)

8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. (James 2:8-10)
- Realize that you are a sinner. - Realize that your sin mocks God.
7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. (Galatians 6:7-8)
- Realize that you are a sinner. - Realize that your sin mocks God. - Realize that there are consequences for your sin.

- The mocked King becomes our means of atonement and reconciliation.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:23-26)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:17-21)
Substitutionary Atonement: Jesus reconciled sinners to God by being their substitute punishment. He absorbed in his person God s righteous wrath against us, because of our sin, that we might be free from sin and its penalty and liberated to enjoy God forever.

Response * Stop living for this world alone because it mocks the King of Kings. * Stop relying on your own righteousness because it mocks the King of Kings. * Stop thinking your sin is of no consequence because it mocks the King of Kings. * Start putting your faith in the King of Kings. * Start living for the King of Kings. * Start being an ambassador for the King of Kings.
