Personalia Our Society has lost a number of members since our last congress in 2019 Prof Voster Muchenje Dr Fergus Hathorn Prof James Hayes Dr Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr Prof Izak Bartholomeus Groenewald Our hearts go out to their families, colleagues and friends May their departed souls rest in eternal peace The Covid-19 pandemic had its toll on our members, their families and beloved industry A word of support is extended to all our members during this difficult time Members are encouraged to comply with safety guidelines including participation in the national vaccination programme

Strategic partnerships SASAS is one of the key Voluntary Associations of SACNASP Represented by Dr C Jansen van Rensburg in the Professional Affairs Committee in liaison with Prof Este van Marle-Koste Prof Nephawe is a member of the SACNASP Board SASAS is a member of World Association for Animal Production (WAAP) Represented by Prof Norman Casey SASAS participated in the General Assembly meeting of WAAP held on 10 Dec 2020 SASAS is represented at Livestock Welfare Coordinating Committee (LWCC) We continue to collaborate with our key stakeholders in academia, research, industry and government

Membership issues Implementation of the new Online Payment System for membership (PayFast) Teething problems were experienced especially for bulk payments by institutions A how-to manual has been developed and placed on SASAS website The pandemic had impact on our membership numbers due to unfavourable economic conditions Details on membership statistics will be provided on the website report

  6. Marketing and Communication SASAS Northern Branch Student Industry Day @ University of Limpopo on 18 July 2019. This event was attended by 100 final-year students from the Universities of Limpopo and Venda @ ALFA Expo in Parys in September 2019 The communique remains one of the main platform for Council to communicate major developments with members September 2019 December 2019 May 2020 December 2020 May 2021 Communication is an area of improvement to ensure that members are kept up to date on Society matters Visit our website for update on new SASAS developments https://www.sasas.co.za/

Governance and secretariat Prof Mike MacNeil appointed as Editor-In-Chief for the SAJAS from 1 Aug 2019 Printed version of SAJAS was phased out only electronic version published Prof Jannes van Ryssen retired as Secretary and Editor-In-Chief in 2020 HCS Health Communications Pty (Ltd) appointed to provide secretariat services for a period of 5 years (1 Sept 2020 to 31 Aug 2025) New 5-year Strategic Plan for SASAS was developed SASAS STRATEGIC PLAN: VISION 2025 Prof Khathutshelo Nephawe is acknowledged for leading this project key project Service Level Agreement is been finalised with ARC on the Online Journal Management System for SAJAS to ensure sustainability

Covid-19 pandemic Covid-19 has affected activities of the society and the industry at large Decision by Council to postpone the 2020 SASAS congress to 2021 Virtual events are now commonplace The Council is only meeting virtually Council is implementing webinars to keep members and industry informed members are encouraged to share with Council topical issues that could be discussed through the webinars The true impact of the pandemic to animal agriculture, research and development, and training and education is yet to be fully quantified The Society should consider its role in the recovery process from the pandemic

  9. 52ndSASAS Virtual congress The 2021 SASAS Congress is held virtually due to the pandemic Council wishes to extend a congratulatory message to the SASAS North Branch for presenting an inaugural virtual SASAS congress through the leadership of their Chairperson Ms Robyn Joubert The active participation of industry is appreciated and sign of good things to come Support of academia, research, and government is the cornerstone of our congress The impact of the virtual presentations will outlive the actual congress

President's exit message Being at the helm of the Society allows one to have a much broader perspective of the size of this institution The main goal of my presidency was about enhancing institutionalization of the Society by creating appropriate governance systems and procedures A number of contracts have been signed with service providers to enable efficient business processes I am confident that this project will be brought to its logical conclusion following the guidelines contained in the new SASAS Strategy: Vision 2025 I wish the incoming President and entire Council a prosperous tenure I remain committed to serving our esteemed society wherever practical Thank you for providing me with a rare and unique opportunity to lead this great institution

SASAS Postgraduate Bursary 5 applications were received University of Free State (2) University of South Africa (1) University of Pretoria Stellenbosch University (1) (1) 2 students were disqualified on membership Recipient / Winner: Mr Andries van der Merwe (UFS) Thanks to the Awards Committee for adjudication of the applications
