Student Teaching Materials SCE Website: https://education.illinois.edu/sce Locate your program: Secondary:https://education.illinois.edu/sce/secondary-program/student-information (Student Teaching EDPR 442 E, M, SB, SC, SP, T,--Year 2 Spring) CI 404 (by content area): Wednesdays, 6-8:50PM Synchronous online through Moodle (Collaborate Ultra) Topics include: Professional issues, job search/interviewing, goal-setting, differentiation strategies, etc.

  4. Student Teaching Handbook: Read through the document carefully and thoroughly You will be held accountable for the outlined expectations Use the handbook as a reference over the course of the experience Make sure your trainings are up to date! (need to be renewed every year)

  5. Placement When you get your placement, do the following: Email your cooperating teacher and introduce yourself. Email your supervisor to introduce yourself. Learn all you can about your school. Look at the school calendar and note holidays and PD days. NOTE: Your placement will follow what your cooperating teacher does. If they are hybrid or in-person, you will be also.

  6. What about COVID testing? If you are returning to campus for a local placement, continue your twice- weekly COVID-19 testing. In order to enter your placement, you must have 2 negative tests 3 days apart. You may start your placement remotely prior to this testing. Treat the school like a university building. Maintain your status as Access Granted. Plan to show your cooperating teacher your status daily. Northern placements, please follow your district s policy regarding testing. Make sure to change your address if you are no longer on campus.

  7. Lesson Plans Formal observation: detailed outline with all required components Daily basis: a lesson outline for each day of the week Lesson plan book Online format Google Doc At a minimum, daily lesson plans must contain the following: Objectives (with related standards) Materials Procedures Assessment/Evaluation Plans can be requested AT ANY TIME by your supervisor without notice!

  8. Observations 6 observations during student teaching by the university supervisor (lesson plan is required) 3 observations prior to mid-term 3 observations after mid-term Regular written feedbackby the cooperating teacher during student teaching

  9. Supervisor You will meet your supervisor on November 10 at 10 am. You will get an invitation to a Zoom link. Please create Box folders for your supervisor and share your resume and cover letter with them.

  10. edTPA Requirement for licensure Encouraged to print off the appropriate edTPA handbook found on Moodle (EDPR 203) Edthena submission support Refer to the submission calendar--must follow this! Hard deadlines are written in red. EdTPA might be waived for Spring Semester by ISBE. Please do not sign up for edTPA until you are told to do so. If you are planning to teach in a different state after graduation, check their policies about edTPA.

  11. Weekly overview of engagement in the classroom: Using the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Model: Student teachers should submit a weekly schedule for the upcoming week outlining the lessons and activities for which they are responsible or have a critical role The schedule will assist the student in being efficient and organized by planning activities and methods of implementation University supervisors will specify the format they would like their students to use Guidelines to takeover

  12. Reminders about student teaching: Student Teaching is a LOT of work! It will be worth it You are receiving 12 credit hours for student teaching The experience is designed to provide opportunities for all candidates based on individual need. Please do not compare your experience with your peers experience. Each teacher candidate will receive what he/she needs. This may include: additional artifact collection, structured observation, additional instructional planning, observing other teachers, additional observations, etc.

  13. Course Requirements: Your placement begins the day that your school starts following Winter Break This may be as early as January 4th, 2020! Your placement ends on May 7th, 2020 (provided make up days are not necessary) Your Spring Break is when your school takes Spring Break If they do not have one, you do not get one either You are still obligated to attend CI 404 online even if your school is on break Your work day follows the teacher contractual day for the building you are placed in

  14. Absences: This is the first placement where you have allowed absences! 3 Sick or Professional Days (1 day may be used to work on edTPA) 2 Snow days (excessive days may be excused; will not be decided until mid-April) 1 Day to attend a job fair of your choosing (in or out of state)

  15. Keep in mind: You may not beg, borrow, or steal days from one absence category to another You are responsible for writing Sub Plans for your Cooperating Teacher to use when you are absent from student teaching Instructional sub plans must be detailed, specific, and complete You are a guest in the classroom, please don t put yourself in a situation that will make things challenging for you or other students after you--you don t want to take the chance of having your invitation rescinded

  16. Words of advice... Build strong relationships early on Pace yourself Be a risk-taker; allow yourself to be vulnerable Collaborate often (with school personnel and each other) Be reflective (more on instruction than management) Take time to care for yourself Focus on what matters most student learning
