  1. 4thBiobased Economy Conference June 5, 2020. Virtual Lene Lange Professor (f), PhD & Dr.Scient. BioEconomy, Research & Advisory, Denmark Lene.Lange2@gmail.com; lenl@DTU.dk

  2. New New Biobased Biobased Opportunities Opportunities - -selected selected highlights highlights Biobased, Negative Emission Technologies (CCU!) Emissions are resources misplaced; can be used for e-fuel, plastic and food! Next level value-adding biorefinery Going beyond valorizing biomass components =>More proteins, lipids, vitamins By growing more biomass (Fungi and Insect larvae) on biorefinery residuals Technologies needed for a Circular Textile Industry EU Directive from 2025 bans burning of outsorted textiles => Sense of urgency! Development of new textile fiber upgrading technologies must be developed The Green Biorefinery of tomorrow (grass, seaweeds low in lignin) For production of local protein & prebiotic food and feed for better Gut-Health

  3. Biobased Biobased Products - -addressing addressing several Products several societal societal challenges challenges Climate change mitigation & adaptation reducing emissions by upgraded use of sidestreams, residues and wastes Responsible consumption of biological resources Rural livelihood and jobs upgrading biomass to value added products More space and habitats for Biodiversity by freeing land by making biobased animal feed, with no use of land Biorefinery products for Health and for Clean&Safe drinking water by Healthy food supplements and biobased products, substituting for pesticides Strengthening sustainable and responsible EU manufacturing & business

  4. New Business Models for the New Business Models for the Biobased New New opportunities opportunities for for SMEs Biobased Era AimHigh! High! Era => => SMEs. . Aim SMEs as Technology Start Ups Delivering technologies to many businesses, e.g. for NET or for Health SMEs as Technology partners for in-house upgrade of sidestreams For a specific industry, by SME licensing out proprietary technologies SMEs as start up companies, integrated in Biorefinery Clusters E.g. upgrading a specific sidestream to higher value product (Food, Health etc) SMEs as new resource-efficient Wastehandlers across sectors Get inspired by SARIA track record!

  5. Dissemination Dissemination of => => Lift EU from Lift EU from Biobased of biorefinery biorefinery technologies Biobased Consortia Consortia to technologies to Biobased Biobased Sectors Sectors Biobased resource efficiency is relevant for all parts of EU Goal: Unlocking full potential of biomass, residues, sidestreams and wastes Such biobased value-added operations are relevant for all parts of Europe! Not just for the few EU consortium partners, funded by Hor2020 projects Contribute to this by Sharing open access biobased-technologies Make platform of public Biorefinery knowledge available & accessible Coordinate PPP R&D in HEU with new ressource-efficient EU Directives

  6. EU EU Needs Needs an International an International Biobased - -and to and to be be ready ready for Biobased Strategy for collaboration collaboration beyond Strategy beyond EU EU Share efficiently biorefinery technologies already in the public domain Position EU as preferred PPP biobased partner globally! Upgrade EUs research support infrastructures to competitive level Culture Collections, fungi & bacteria, incl. Open Access Biological production Bioinformatics, DNA, RNA, Proteins and Metabolites including enzyme functional annotation and microbial secretome characterization Enzyme databases: Carbohydrate active enzymes, Proteases, Lipases etc Use it for: Building Africa/ EU alliance for developing the African Bioeconomy Building Win/Win collaborations with industrialized countries
