  2. LEARN FROM LIEUTENANT COLUMBO Question them. Mercilessly. From Death Hits the Jackpot, (1991) Three primary questions: What do you mean by that? How did you come to that conclusion? Have you ever considered Listen, then come up with your own Never make a claim when a question will do!

  3. THE COLUMBOTACTIC What do you mean by that? This question is designed to add definition to a claim, to force the other to think about their claim How did you come to that conclusion? This question examines the reasons behind the belief, and starts to see if the reasons or evidence support the claim Have you ever considered that This opens the other s mind to other options they have likely not considered, gives you an opportunity to present counter-evidence, potentially sets the stage for further discussion

  4. LETS PRACTICE! Do you believe in evolution? I don t believe God exists. The Bible is just a bunch of fairy tales, written by men. Can you think of more? Do you take the Bible literally?

  5. DO YOU READ THE SPORTS PAGE LITERALLY?

  6. TACTICS II: SUICIDE, TAKING THE ROOF OFF, STEAMROLLER, MORE MICHAEL W. MOYLES CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS WWW.CLEARTHINKINGCHRISTIAN.COM MOYLESM@HOTMAIL.COM

  7. SUICIDE

  8. SUICIDE: THE SELF-REFUTING ARGUMENT A statement that falsifies itself the moment it is stated, it becomes false A favorite tactic of millennials and postmodernists

  9. SUICIDE: THE SELF-REFUTING ARGUMENT You must be listening carefully! Watch for all or nothing language, extreme claims

  11. TAKING THE ROOF OFF (reductio ad absurdum) Adopt your opponent s point of view, for the sake of argument, and take it to its logical (or illogical) conclusion Take their view for a test drive, and see where you end up. Often highly useful in social issues abortion, homosexuality, same-sex marriage Four easy steps: Clarify/Simplify Follow Invite Listen Let s try it!

  12. TAKING THE ROOF OFF I was born with same-sex attraction, therefore it is okay to act upon it. Simplify: If I was born with it, then it s okay. Follow: If I was born with a certain tendency or behavior, then it s okay for me to do it. Invite: I was born with the desire to watch young girls undress, or the tendency to drink too much. Is it okay for me to do that? Morals are not objective, they are relative to different cultures and societies. Simplify: Morals are cultural (relative), not objective. Follow: Right and wrong are determined by the culture or the society. Invite: Child sacrifice (practiced in many cultures) is not wrong, and neither was Hitler (he did what was right according to him and his society).

  13. STEAMROLLER How to deal with an aggressive questioner, who uses force rather than reason to advance the discussion Typically: Consistently interrupting Asking questions before others are answered Changing the subject Not listening

  14. STEAMROLLER They are being aggressive, so you must be a bit aggressive (but not rude) in return Three Easy Steps Stop, then negotiate Graciously remind (even shame if necessary) Depart
