Advantages
Improves the amount of communication
Video conferences, texting, messaging, e-mail, social networking sites
Encourages innovation and creativity
Many choices to get messages out to internal and external customers
Saves time
Creates mobility
Breaks down boundaries
Disadvantages
Causes distractions
Decreases productivity
Higher potential for miscommunication
Lack of nonverbal communication to assist in decoding messages
Can hurt interpersonal relationships

More complex messages, difficult messages, and time sensitive messages should
be delivered face to face or via phone

Traditional format:
Greeting
Main point in opening sentence
Avoid “text speak”
Keep it concise!
Signature with contact information
Proofread!
Do not “reply all” unless it is necessary

Keep your personal social networking and your professional social networking separate
Be selective in channels you establish profiles

Think carefully about everything you post
Keep it updated
