Two impactful initiatives in the healthcare sector aimed at promoting organ and tissue donation within communities are highlighted. Faith Leader Luncheon Georgia Barrett, Teresa Haro & Gemma Robinson Specialist Nurse Organ Donation Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Trust Raising awareness in our faith community's Discussions We set out an agenda that shared information about the donation journey and our role as specialist nurses. As part of promoting organ donation in our community we decided to invite different leaders of various faiths to a luncheon to discuss organ and tissue donation. We had a donor family member share their experience of their loved one donating. We also wanted to learn from others about how we can better communicate with families with various cultural & religious aspects. We had a recipient share their experience living with renal failure as well as receiving a renal transplant. Our clinical lead was also able to share his knowledge around the Jewish faith. After all the presentations and speakers, we allocated time for more discussions. Results The luncheon was well attended. We had faith leaders from the Jewish, Christian, Sikh and Hindu communities present. After several discussions, most faith leaders present had a new understanding of organ and tissue donation and most were in support of donation. The Future The feedback was really positive and we plan to have another faith leaders luncheon at the end of the year. We hope to open this up to a wider part of the community.
Engaging Our Community: Organ Donation Memorial and Promotion Dr Jamie Strachan (CLOD) & Rosanna Sharples (SNOD) Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Trust Level 4 Trust How to make a difference As a level 4 Trust we have fewer opportunities for organ donation to be considered which makes every identification & referral much more precious. As well as working on our clinical practices, the hospital Organ Donation Committee (ODC) decided to branch out within our hospital and into the community to raise awareness and actively promote organ and tissue donation. Promotion We have lift wraps installed in the main lifts in the hospital and are planning on extending this to all the hospital lifts Collaboration with the hospital BAME staff network saw them run their own organ donation event in Trust Teaching within schools to KS3 & KS4 pupils Presenting at the Milton Keynes Council of Multi-Faiths meeting Kidney recipient invited to join the ODC as a lay member Organ & Tissue Donation Memorial The hospital needed a more prominent organ donation memorial to recognise the donors and their families, and also act as a promotional tool. A space was identified in the hospital main entrance and the Hospital Art Studio were commissioned to create a bespoke and striking memorial. Over time the individual names of organ & tissue donors will be added to each flower. There was a desire to make the memorial more than just a piece of art work, and so it was designed around a piano. The piano allows staff and the public to use the space for reflection and to encourage people to play music. It is used daily by staff members and the public, and is quite the focal point in the main entrance. Where we are now 2022/23 saw us achieve 100% identification, referral and SNOD involvement rates, with our highest number of donors ever for the Trust. We have raised our profile within the hospital community and donation is now a normalised conversation. Our links within the community are becoming stronger and we have a fantastic memorial which has been welcomed by our donor families. Sharing hospital engagement and public promotion activities Abi Roberts, Pam Makin, Dr Renate Homewood SNOD, Chair, CLOD / Noble s Hospital, Isle of Man / MANX Care / Level 4 Conclusion An ODC with a Punch We believe it is the diversity and commitment of each member that makes our committee well run and effective. Due to our activities we have a voice in our hospital and in the community and receive recognition and support from both. Social media presence helps us to engage with the public. Our registered charity supports the Organ Donation garden, and will sponsor keep sakes that are currently being designed by a local jeweller. Our Organ Donation Committee was set up in 2013 and meets 4 x per year. Our members include an Organ Donor Mum, a Heart Transplant Recipient, an ICU Matron (chair), Mortuary, Theatre, ED representatives and link nurses, CLOD (Respiratory Consultant) and SNOD. Our committee is very active and inclusive, and we get together socially after each meeting.
