  1. FIELD FINDINGS FROM MASAKA DISTRICT A Presentation to the Zonal Review and Planning Workshop held on 19th February 2019 at Hotel Brovad in Masaka

  3. Field Findings -Masaka Field visit focused on the pineapple farmers Mr. Kiggundu Emmanuel Mr.Kayiira Farouk Visited a Poultry farmer; Mrs Tamale Visited Dairy farmers; Ms. Namwalo Josephine and Mr. Zziwa Mbalangu

  4. Pineapple Enterprise Visited Mr. Kiggundu Emmanuel (34 years), Kyanamukaaka village ,Kyanamukaaka sub county Initial planting materials of 14,000 suckers for 1 acre got from NAADS/OWC From 1 acre he has expanded to 5 acres found planting Proceeds also used for purchase of 500 Layers

  5. Pineapple Enterprise by Mr. Kiggundu Emmanuel in Kyanamukaka

Harvests Fist harvest (18 months) got 8-10millions Second harvest will be after 24 months Third harvest will be after 4 years Income reduces with time due to reducing fruit size ; from 1,000/- 400/= He intercropped with coffee which was at first fruiting to get extra income. He uses inorganic fertilizers(NPK& Urea) and organic from poultry litter for increased productivity

  7. Marketing Most of pineapples are taken by Kenyan traders Prices fluctuate in peak periods from 500/= to 1000/= on farm An acre of 14,000 plants gives about 10,000 fruits @ sold at 1,000 gives 10Million so farmer has a targetof 50 Million and has planted 5 acres

  8. Challenges High cost of inputs ( fertilizers and agro chemicals) Prolonged drought Inadequate quantities of planting materials issued Unstable markets and fluctuating prices

  9. Impacts Majority of the Youth in Kyantale parish are engaged in pineapple production A high level of commitment from the youth who motivate each other by offering employment in the fields The youths support each other to expand on acreages being planted Proceeds are being ploughed back to expand on area planted and to poultry and piggery

  10. Poultry Enterprise Visited Mrs. Tamale of Kyanamukaaka village Kyanamukaaka subcounty. Received 200 layers in October 2017, lost 40 due to transportation stress. Has trained and motivated fellow women to engage in the enterprise Ploughed back proceeds and now has 950 Layers

  12. Challenges faced in Poultry High mortality arising from transportation stress Lack of water for the birds during prolonged drought Fluctuating feed prices

  13. Dairy enterprise Visited Namwalo of Kamulegu in Kyesiiga S/c and Zziwa Mbalangu of Kanoni in Kamuzinda. They received the heifers in April 2017,have calved Were affected by Adaptation challenges; first calving gave 5litres per day but second calving is now at 10 L/day for Namwalo. She has adequate pastures and has revolved the first calf. Her efforts to promote Banana production are being derailed by BBW

  16. Challenges in Dairy Enterprise High cost of Drugs yet are counterfeits Prolonged drought has affected established pastures Silent heat which renders use of AI ineffective so some use Bulls Poor Sanitation in the Zero grazing units

  17. Maize for food security Visited Mr. Matovu Kkindu Village, Kyanamukaaka Subcounty Planted 5 acres of Longe 10 H Field used as a demonstration garden to promote awareness of improved varieties, Recommended agronomic practices, manure application, Post harvest handling Some to be used to demonstrate feed mixing for animals
