  2. BRIEF BACKGROUND The Psalmist compares the thirsting of his soul after God to the thirsting of a hart (deer) after water. His thirst was not merely for the temple and the ordinances, but for fellowship with God himself. None but those with a personal encounter with God can comprehend with this kind of thirst-for the living God. Take notice that the Psalmist felt abandoned by God during the time of oppression, suffering and discouragement. Despite the difficulties he faced, he stuck himself with God He knew that only in God will he find joy, gladness and happiness.
