ADMISSION TO HIGH SCHOOL Into 9thGrade: All non-KCIA students must complete Open Enrollment Recommendations Transcript Review, Essay Current students complete Intent to Stay in April Into 11thGrade: Must Complete Open Enrollment, unless KCIA student Application, Transcript Review for Prerequisites, Essay, Recommendations Successful Completion of the Personal Project at the end of 10thgrade
MYP PERSONAL PROJECT What is the Personal Project? The Personal Project is an individual, self-directed project completed in Year 5 (10th grade). It is not attached to a grade of any kind, but it is a requirement for completion of the Middle Years Programme. The project must have a principled action. The project must extend beyond what students have learned in their classes. It is not required that all personal projects provide a direct service to the community, but it should allow students to learn the importance of being socially responsible and how to take thoughtful and appropriate action. Principled action includes: Developing an area of interest that extends beyond your course subjects. Communicating and sharing your learning with others. Changing your behavior as a result of your learning with the understanding that your choices and decisions do make a difference. Reflecting regularly and recording how this process has influenced your actions, attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs.
MYP PERSONAL PROJECT WHAT WILL BE REQUIRED? Process Journal - This documents the research and development throughout the process. (It is reflective diary entries about progress made.) A Formal Written Report - The report allows for demonstration of ethical research skills and reflection on the learning process in a written format. (maximum 15 page paper) An End Product that will be showcased. (The Product is the tangible outcome of the process what is done or made.) Examples of a final product could be: an original work of art (painting, sculpture, script for a film, play, etc.) a model a business plan a campaign a blueprint or architectural drawing an extended piece of writing (literary, scientific, etc.) a course of study a debate a film or video, etc.
MYP TO DP The MYP spans grades 6 10 (7 10 at KCIA) and is designed to prepare students for DP Increasing Rigor Spanish every year all year Art every year Personal Project The DP is much more challenging and rigorous Equivalent to taking a full load of AP classes

HOW TO EARN THE FULL DIPLOMA Must earn a combined total of 24 points. 1-7 scale score for each class Must compete the Extended Essay, CAS, and TOK with satisfactory scores Can earn up to additional 3 points for EE and TOK
THE CORE Extended Essay 4,000 word research paper over about a year Should take about 40 hours CAS Creativity, Activity, Service Students engage in activities over an 18 month period TOK (Theory of Knowledge) 2 semester course Students do an Exhibition and TOK Essay
WHAT IS CAS? CAS is at the heart of the Diploma Program: Similar to a senior project, but more in-depth and completed over two years, instead of one It includes Experiences, A Group Project and a Portfolio Organized around the three strands: Creativity -Exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance Activity - Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle Service - Collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need Develops 5 Stages of learning to achieve both short & long-term goals Accomplishes 7 Learning Outcomes Designed to strengthen and extend students personal and interpersonal learning from PYP & MYP. Provides students a way to explore & express their interests, passions, personalities and perspectives in meaningful way Enables students to demonstrate IB learner profiles in real and practical ways, to grow as unique individuals and to recognize their role in relation to others.
CAS PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Starts Fall of Junior Year 18 month process Involves at least 1 hour of commitment per week, outside of school hours Monthly meetings with CAS Advisor and/or CAS Coordinator 3 Formal Interviews with CAS Advisor Must be completed by March of Senior Year Successful completion is required, as one component of the Full IB Diploma Use of ManageBac for Portfolio components Reflection is a component of each stage of the CAS
CAS EXPERIENCES PROJECT(S) PORTFOLIO: A series of CAS Experiences: Can do individual experiences for each strand Can combine strands within experiences Based on personal interest, skill, talent or opportunity for growth Provide opportunities to develop IB Learner Profiles beyond the classroom Must not be used or included in the student s DP course requirements At least one CAS Group Project: Series of collaborative, sequential experiences lasting at least 1 month Done with a group of students or with members of the wider community Includes 1 or more strands A CAS Portfolio, which is used to: Showcase evidence of CAS experiences Document the 7 CAS Learning Outcomes Reflect on Experiences and Learning The 5 Stages of CAS Learning are imbedded in the above components: Investigation Preparation Action Reflection Demonstration
CAS EXAMPLES: One Theme GARDEN Creativity - Student designs garden plot/layout Activity - Student(s) plant & tend garden. This could also fulfill the Group Project component. Service - Student donates vegetables to a local food bank for the homeless. Two Themes PORTRAIT PAINTING & FITNESS PROGRAM Creativity - Experiences of learning to paint and produce a self-portrait Activity & Service (Group Project) - Student coordinates with peers to develop & lead an after school, weekly fitness program on campus open to the community at no cost. Three Themes KNITTING, RUNNING 5K RACE & TUTORING Creativity - Experiences learning to knit a scarf Activity - Training for and running a 5K Race Service (and Group Project) - Students coordinate & implement an after school tutoring program for peers
CAS LEARNING OUTCOMES: Completion of CAS is based on student achievement of the 7 CAS Learning Outcomes: LO 1 - Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth LO 2 - Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process LO 3 - Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience LO 4 - Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences LO 5 - Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively LO 6 - Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance LO 7 - Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
IB DIPLOMA BENEFITS Students are uniquely prepared for college and beyond Many of the courses offer 5.0 GPA scale Can earn college credit .. Up to a full year if a student is able to earn the Full IB Diploma Our students will be extremely competitive in the admissions process for the top colleges
COLLEGE CREDITS: CSU CHICO California State University, Chico recognizes the International Baccalaureate as a strong college preparatory program. Applicants currently enrolled in a Full IB Diploma program will be considered to have met or have in progress all college preparatory subject requirements for admission. Additional honors points will be awarded in GPA calculations for achievement in up to eight IB courses taken in grades 11 and 12 and indicated on the high school transcript. Six semester units of advanced standing credit will be awarded for each Higher Level examination passed with a score of 4, 5, 6, or 7.
COLLEGE CREDITS: UC SANTA CRUZ Students completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with a score of 30 or above will receive 30 quarter units (20 semester units) total toward their UC undergraduate degree. Students completing the IB Certificate will be awarded 8 quarter units (51/3 semester units) for each IB Higher Level examination passed with a score of 5 or above.
COLLEGE CREDITS: USF The University of San Francisco recognizes the academic challenge and motivation inherent in the IB Diploma Program. Such a program, satisfactorily completed, will virtually guarantee an applicant admission to USF. In addition, the University will grant advanced placement of 10 semester units for each higher level result of 4, 5, 6, or 7. Thus a student with 3 such results will automatically be placed in the second (sophomore) year of the Bachelor's degree.
