TRAINING PROGRAM ON EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR CORONA VIRUS AND LASSA FEVER INFECTIONS PRIMARY HEALTHCARE BOARD Monday 10thto Friday 14thFebruary 2020 LICC Building Alausa
Emergency Preparedness 1 Objective: To equip health workers with knowledge and skills critical for responding to and controlling infectious outbreaks especially in the context of Covid19 and Lassa Fever infections. Participants: A total of 350 participants are expected over the 5 days of the training program. The selection was multisectoral from across the health spectrum. Doctors, nurses, CHEWs, Pharmacists, Lab Technologists and Environmental Health Officers. This approach made it an integrated learning experience. Media Exposure: Lagos State Ministry of Information covered the workshop and gave it wide exposure courtesy of our Board Member, Mr Sina Thorpe.
Emergency Preparedness 2 Resource Persons: Prof Oduyebo of LUTH was the lead resource. She was supported by consultants in Pathology and Microbiology. The Lagos State Ministry of Health presented the policy position on emergency preparedness. Curriculum + Delivery The scope of learning was broad enough to cover all the critical topics from policy to practice. Content was pitched at the right level not too technical or scientific, more practical and pragmatic (What we need to DO) Delivery was designed to be interactive, giving participants opportunity to ask questions. There was a practical session. Delegates were eager to learn and engaged with the resource persons. They asked questions relating to practice and misconceptions.
Emergency Preparedness 3 Topics Covered: Basics of Covid19 and Lassa Fever Infection Laboratory Diagnosis and Policy on Collection of Specimens Infection Prevention and Control Respiratory Hygiene Lagos State Policy and Procedure Waste Management Administrative Arrangements: Venue was central and training room conducive. All teaching equipment was available and the secretariat was effective. Impact of Training 350 HRH trained in infection control and emergency response. If each participant trains and mentors another 5 HRH, we will have re-trained 1750 out of 3062 staff or 57% at PHCB.
