2 Improved pandemic preparedness could be achieved by proactively managing emerging virus threats focused on four discreet activities using currently available tools Discovery and Surveillance Targeted basic research Translational research and product development Clinical trial infrastructure and deployment capacity
Series of Meetings First Consultation (Today) 3 A scientific framework for epidemic and pandemic research preparedness regardless of perceived pandemic potential Second Consultation (January 18) Clinical research for priority pathogens with epidemic potential Third Consultation (January 19) Research response to pathogen X during a pandemic Fourth Consultation (February TBD) Addressing uncertainty during epidemics and pandemics by generating randomized evidence
4 Objectives of TODAY s Meeting A scientific framework for epidemic and pandemic research preparedness To review the start of the art and the scientific opportunities and challenges for all viral and bacterial families, regardless of perceived pandemic potential including: Defining the scope of emerging virus threats through discovery Expanding generalizable basic research that supports the development of vaccines for future threats To outline cross-cutting scientific actions that are needed, globally and at the country-level, to address development challenges including global collaboration to coordinate basic and translational research as part of pandemic preparedness
