THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 22, 2023 SCRIPTURE READINGS OF THE WEEK FROM THE DESK OF Fr. Boniface My dear friends: In communion with our brothers and sisters from the Philippines origin, we celebrate today the feast of the Santo Nino. For some of us who are not so familiar with the feast of the Santo Nino in the Catholic tradition, I formulated a couple of questions to help us have an idea bout the devotion to the Holy Child: 1) How did the devotion come about? The devotion to the Santo Nino can be traced back to the city of Prague in Czechoslovakia. A Spanish princess gifted the Carmelites with a 19-inch statue of the Child Jesus. The image of the Holy Child dressed in royal robes caught the attention of the people and they liked it. There were those who claimed to have received certain favors through the invocation of the Child Jesus. The number of devotees grew and, in no time, the devotion spread throughout Europe. The devotion came to the Philippines in 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan gave Juana, the queen of Cebu, a statue of the Santo Nino as a baptismal gift. The image would later be known as El Santo Nino de Cebu. In 1565, Legazpi and a group of Augustinians arrived and found this image in a hut. The Augustinians took the image and installed in Cebu Basilica and later enshrined there. It was declared patron of the First Spanish Christian settlement in the Philippines. From this site, the devotion to the Santo Nino would spread throughout the Philippines and beyond. 2) Does it have any basis in the Bible? Scripture tells us that the Son of God became incarnate to save us from evil and sin. He took the form of a lowly and humble infant wrapped in a swaddling cloth and laid in a manger. (Lk 2:7). What does the devotion teach us? The devotion to the Santo Nino teaches us to be like a child. Jesus said to his disciples: Unless you turn and become like little children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. (Mat.18:3). The feast of Santo Nino is a constant invitation for us to be child-like, trusting in God, depending on his guidance and being humble in our dealing with others! Blessed Feast of Santo Nino to you! Announcements Announcements Seven Days Sanctuary Lamp Devotion The Sanctuary Lamp which burns in the Sanctuary of our church, a reminder of the Lord s Presence in the Most Holy Eucharist, will burn from January 22nd to January 28th for Margaret Turbe. Parish Information Parish Information Sacrament of Baptism Fourth Sunday of each month. Please register your children. Present a copy of the child birth certificate. A minimum of 4 classes is required. Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) Classes Classes will be held every Sunday during the school year and begin with attendance at Holy Mass and instructions thereafter. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Classes RCIA is the journey of faith by which interested persons become members of the Roman Catholic Church. The program instructs adults to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church through Baptism and/or Confirmation and Holy Communion. To register, please call the Office at (340) 714-1101. Sacrament of Penance Confession is the sacrament that allows us to admit our faults and develop humility, but the most profound part is we get to experience Christ s gift of mercy. Confession is available Saturday evening at 4:30 p.m., Sunday at 7:00 a.m. or by appointment. Funerals All funeral services begin at 10:30 a.m. No funerals are held on weekends. Arrangements must be made with the Church before funeral arrangements with the funeral home. Sacrament of Marriage Please make arrangements with Fr. Boniface-Blanchard 6 months before your wedding by calling the church office. Parish Registration Parishioners who are 18 years and older are invited to register at the Church Office as well as become active and contributing members. We would like to maintain an up-to- date listing of all Saint Anne parishioners.
