  1. Ocean Currents El Ni o and La Ni a

  2. Changes ~ A change in ocean temperature can affect weather patterns for long periods of time. ~Every few years, such a change occurs in the Pacific Ocean.

  3. El Nio ~ An unusual warming of the surface water in the eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator is known as El Ni o. ~This causes the jet stream to be disrupted (usually it is pushed south) which affects weather patterns across North America.

  4. El Nio ~ This leads to an increase in temperature and precipitation in the southern part of the United States, especially southern California.

  5. El Nio ~ North Carolina experiences wetter than normal winters during an El Ni o. ~It also decreases the number of Atlantic Hurricanes.

  6. El Nio

  7. La Nia ~An unusual cooling of the surface water in the eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator is known as La Ni a. ~This causes opposite weather patterns from an El Ni o.
