Peekskill Middle School Humanities Course Overview
Peekskill Middle School offers a comprehensive Humanities course for the 2017-2018 academic year, taught by Ms. Jaclyn Gabriele. Balanced Literacy (Writing) Shared Writing teacher models writing to whole class Interactive Writing teacher composes text with the assistance of students Writer s Workshop teacher conducts a mini lesson teaching a specific strategy, the student implements this strategy in their writing, the teacher conferences with the student to review and support the student s work
Expectations All students are expected to: Be on time to class Communicate and discuss any issues/concerns Complete all classwork assignments Complete homework every night Review notes and study Display respect for themselves and each other Remain focused and participate; and
Humanities Grading Policy Classwork (work, effort, participation) 20% Tests and Quizzes 30% Writing Projects 35% Homework 10% Citizenship/Behavior 5%
Tickets For Our Humanities Class How to earn tickets: How to lose tickets: Participating Out of seat and wandering Raising hand Calling out Working hard and trying your best Off task Following directions/rules Disrupting others Helping others Inappropriate language Being respectful Not following directions/expectations Listening to others 1 ticket taken = Warning 2 tickets taken = Phone call home *Every Friday we will have cash-in during callback.
PBIS-High Fives Any teacher can give you a High Five throughout the day, including in the hallway. This is part of our PBIS or reward system when we see role-model behavior or work. When you reach certain amounts of High Fives you can trade them in for prizes.
Class Points Similar to high fives, Class Points are awarded during class when everyone is following the classroom rules. Each class will be competing against each other. The first class to fill their container with cotton balls will win a party. How do we earn points?? Examples: Everyone does their homework Everyone is walking quietly in the hallway Everyone is on task Participation
Supervisory Schedule Monday -Town Hall (Character Ed Focus -first and third Monday of month - second and fourth Monday for work completion) Tuesday -D.E.A.R. Wednesday -Fun Wednesday Thursday -Character Education Friday -Fun Friday
Extra Help and Callback Every day there is time for all children to catch-up on any assignments. They may go during their supervisory block of time if they so desire. In addition, during our afternoon homebase all children have an opportunity to speak with individual teachers and/or work on assignments during call back from 2:40-3:00pm.
Parent Portal and PTO Progress reports and report cards will NOT be mailed home. You can sign up for Parent Portal, which will allow you to view your child s grades, progress reports, and report cards. Communication and Contact Information It is very important that there is an open line of communication between the school and the parents/guardians. If at any time you have questions or concerns, you can email me. I check my emails daily. You can also call the school at 737-4542 and leave a message.
