Welcome to Chorus!
Middle School Chorus begins the first of three possible
years of chorus! Chorus students will learn skills to
improve their vocal abilities, learn how to read written
music, and sing a variety of music from familiar tunes to
complex ones! As they gain experience in chorus, they
will improve their skills, learn part-singing and have
many more performance opportunities. By participating
in a performance ensemble, students will build esteem,
access multiple career pathways, and serve their school
and community!

Hello and welcome to the Jackson Middle School Chorus! Chorus is a
performing exploratory class that provides an opportunity for students to
learn how to sing in an ensemble and perform music both on and off stage.
My goal is to give you the knowledge and skills to read and sing music
independently in an ensemble setting. In music, your opportunities are
endless! I am so excited to be working with you!
Mrs. Owens’
CHORUS
Concert Attire
In order to accomplish our goals, students have the following expectations:
Practice daily
.
Be prepared
 daily.
Be respectful
of the instruments, your peers, the teacher, and yourself.
Expectations and Goals
Chorus is a
performing ensemble art
and the work we do during class and at home to
prepare for concerts is
assessed
in a culminating concert or other performance.
Attendance and participation in our concerts and performances is mandatory
. They
are scheduled around school sports schedules to the extent possible so as not to conflict.
All students are reminded of these events and it is the student’s responsibility to keep
parents informed.
Chorus is not just an individual activity, nor do we have a “bench” of students to pull in to
perform when you are absent.
EVERY SINGLE MEMBER
is critical to the success and
quality of the performance. If one person is out, the entire ensemble suffers.
If a student is unable to attend an event, they must provide
PRIOR written
communication with the director at least one week in advance
 in order to have an
opportunity to complete a make-up assignment. Dishonesty can result in dismissal from
the program. Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by the director and principal.
Concert
Attendance
Part of the performance grade is the appearance and decorum of the student at
the performance.
All performing students are required to wear the following
:
Black dress pants (no denim, sweatpants, leggings!)
Black socks (solid black)
Boys: Black dress shirt (we may order these as a group)
Girls: Black blouse with sleeves that reach four fingers past the shoulder seam
(we may order these as a group)
Black dress shoes (solid shoes with no white or color designs, no flip flops)
Web Sites
As musicians, we are constantly practicing
to improve our skills. As such, students
have the opportunity to record and re-
record their playing tests up until the due
date when grades are posted in the
gradebook. No re-dos are allowed during
the last week of the quarter.
