This document discusses the technical issues and priorities for coastal fisheries and aquaculture in Tokelau, a group of low-lying coral atolls heavily dependent on coastal resources. It highlights the need for assessing fisheries resources, supporting sustainability, and exploring aquaculture potential. The challenges include transport/isolation, lack of resources, and capacity/capability issues in fisheries management. Addressing these challenges is crucial for the sustainable development of coastal fisheries and aquaculture in Tokelau amidst the impacts of climate change.

  1. Third SPC Regional Technical Meeting on Coastal Fisheries TOKELAU COASTAL FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE TECHNICAL ISSUES AND PRIORITIES

  2. Coastal Fisheries Technical Priorities Tokelau is a group of 3 low lying coral atolls and is heavily dependent on coastal fisheries resources for protein and for their livelihood. It is also one of the many Pacific Island countries that is heavily impacted by the emerging climate change. 1. Assessment of coastal fisheries resources and supporting environment- survey of inshore fisheries resources to identify abundance of the diverse fish species to support local communities, 2. Methodologies to support the sustainability of these coastal fisheries resources- assistance in identifying methods and management advise to assist our respective Taupulega s (Village Councils) to better manage the use and utilisation of these fisheries resources.

  3. Aquaculture Technical Priorities 1. Assessment of potential aquaculture projects and programmes- assess the Tokelau coastal environment to identify potential aquaculture projects and programmes that can be implemented in Tokelau 2. Assessment of clam populations on the 3 atolls and possible clam transplant on one of the atolls where clams have become scarce to extinction.

  4. Actions taken since RTMCF2 (Nov 2018) 1. Ongoing data collection

  5. Coastal Fisheries Issues or Challenges 1. Transport/Isolation- 2. Lack of Resources (Human & Financial) 3. Capacity & Capability (Technical & Scientific)

  6. Aquaculture Issues or Challenges 1. Lack of understanding of, and information on our diverse coastal fisheries resources and the surrounding environment that supports these resources and the effects of climate change on these resources and the environment.
