  1. A Christians Perspective Divorce

  2. (CDC) 2020 Divorce Rate 45% https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/marriage-divorce.htm

  3. To Be Honest Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Some psychologists believe that divorce can be as traumatic as the death of a spouse Not everyone is going to agree with you on topic of divorce This does not give anyone the right to be hateful or unloving Rather this ought to serve as an opportunity to stand for the truth and to love one another I do not believe divorce was as rare as some try to claim for their generations

  4. Biblically Speaking Matthew 5:31-32 Matthew 19:1-9 Deuteronomy 24:1-3 Some Jews erroneously viewed uncleanness as anything in the wife that displeases her husband she burned my breakfast! Jesus concludes uncleanness as sexual immorality, sexual sin.

  5. But Paul said! 1 Corinthians 7:10-24 Not a single thing Paul says contradicts what the Lord teaches in Matt 5, Matt 19, Mark 10, Luke 16 Nothing within Paul s teaching is permissive as he clearly forbids divorce not once, but four times! Attempting to prooftext one verse out of the whole context will make it impossible to understand Paul s teaching

  6. 1 Corinthians 7:10-13 (NKJV) (10) Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. (11) But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife. (12) But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. (13) And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him.

  7. One may reasonably conclude That the teaching of Paul in 1 Cor 7 forbids, prohibits, denies divorce! God s law on divorce for causes other than fornication (1 Cor 7:10-13) Unauthorized God s law on divorce for fornication (Matt 19:9) Authorized Even though authorized, not all choose to divorce and I commend those who decide to work out their marital problems

  8. Lets compare similar passages 1 John 2:1-2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. Sin is the subject and John clearly prohibits it!

  9. Lets compare similar passages 1 Cor 7:11 but if she does leave 1 John 2:1 And if anyone sins Neither Paul or John is giving anyone permission to divorce or sin. Both passages prohibits something; one is divorce which is sin, the other one is sin in general Neither passage prohibits AND permits at the same time! That does not make any sense!

  10. But what about abandonment? 1 Corinthians 7:14-15 The marriage between a believer and unbeliever is not any less of a marriage than between two believers. Paul has been talking about divorce in all previous passages since verse 10. People argue for this position because they want the believer to be allowed to remarry. It will bring about contradictions from everything that Paul has said within the context

  11. Contingency Law This is what you are to do when this happens Verse 11 if she leaves, she must remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband Verse 15 if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave Abandonment is not what Paul is talking about, he is talking about divorce Greek word is CHORIZO G5563 (Matt 19:9, Mark 10:9, 1 Cor 7:10-11)

  12. Does This Authorize Divorce? No - God is not authorizing or applauding the divorce (Matt 19:6 What God has joined together, let no man separate.) 1 Cor 7:15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. Some argue that they were never married to begin with because they were married to an unbeliever

  13. Words Have Meaning Romans 7:2-3 For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man. The Greek word for bound deo G1210 which means to bind, tie, fasten. (1 Cor 7:27,39) When Paul used bound , he meant marriage

  14. Words Have Meaning 1 Corinthians 7:15 the brother or sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. The Greek word for under bondage is douloo G1402 which means to make a slave of , enslaved This word is never used to describe marriage in the scriptures!

  15. Get To The Point Preacher! Verses 13, 14 tells us that that the believer must stay married to the unbeliever (let no man put asunder) Verse 16 questions us with in certain time, we might save our spouse Verse 15 means that the believer is not enslaved to any such law that would require one to sacrifice their faith or give up on God

  16. Remarriage Not In Verse 15 Context Paul finished the passage with God has called us to peace We cannot make someone stay with us by sacrificing our faith to God In order to be at peace with God and man, we must let the discontent unbeliever leave but remain faithful to God

  17. Final Thoughts Allow me to recall some of what I said at the beginning Not everyone will agree on divorce 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. Plan your marriage, not your wedding. Divorce before you marry.
