NGOs and Voluntary Works in my Country Egl Dzemydait Leila Machmudovait
What is an NGO? NGO in short is a non- governmental organization. It usually doesn t seek profit from its activity, but seeks certain social or political goals at a community, national or international level. A few examples: helping homeless people and animals, caring for lonely seniors, people with disabilities, families and individuals at risk, etc.
So what are the most popular NGOs in Lithuania now?
Order of Malta or Maltie iai The Order of Malta is a subject of international law with a special status. It is not a separate state because it has no territory or population, nor is it an international organization because it was not established by agreement of states and does not pursue economic or political goals. The Order of Malta is a unique institution and is guided by the old Latin motto: 'Tuitio fidei et obsequium pauperum' - safeguarding the faith and helping the needy.
The mission The mission is to fight poverty, exclusion, disease and loneliness. The 900-year- old humanitarian activities of the Order of Malta are renewed daily in hospitals, medical and social centers in more than 120 countries. The Order of Malta provides assistance to all who need it. This institution also has well- organized emergency services in various parts of the world.
POLA Lithuanian Cancer Patient Coalition POLA s aim is to minimize the number of people affected by cancer to as low as possible. Also, to ensure that both patients and their families have access to effective treatment and the best possible informative, social, psychological and mental support.
Thats why they: educate society on how to reduce the risks of developing cancer; teach patients how to actively engage in their treatment process; organise free seminars, training, art therapies and conferences dedicated to patients. Good for: volunteering
Nature Conservation Association Baltic Wolf The Association is concerned with the protection of mammals living in the wild, especially large predators and other rare and endangered species. It strives for a peaceful coexistence of human beings with wild mammals and wants to maintain a harmonious attitude towards the environment, nature and wildlife.
Finally, the Baltic Wolf seeks to: break down myths, groundless fears about wolves; aims for the fair and ethical treatment of mammals; seeks transparent and rational decision-making towards Lithuanian wildlife. Good for: volunteering
Food bank "Maisto bankas" is an open, impartial and independent non-governmental organization that relies on the help of people of good will and socially responsible companies. By cooperating with social non-profit organizations and institutions, they aim to ensure that no good food is thrown away, and that food support reaches the people who live the hardest lives. "Maisto bankas" promotes responsible food consumption, rational nutrition, promotes efficient use of resources and public solidarity in the fight against food waste, protecting the environment and helping people in need.
Mission and vision Fight food waste and help the people in need of food. Lithuania, where food is not wasted and there are no hungry people.
Silver line The Silver Line aims to become the first choice for older people who have no one to talk to, providing them with regular friendship conversations with like-minded people, providing emotional or informational support. With their activities want to break established stereotypes about old age and the old person, to foster the ideas of positive old age - every person, regardless of age or social status, is worthy of the life they want to live.
And their mission? Strengthen the emotional well- being of older people. Reduce loneliness and social exclusion of older people.
Active Youth Association Active Youth (AY) aims to provide young people (including those with fewer opportunities, disabilities and from other sensitive social groups) with international exchanges, training and projects opportunities.
WHY? To improve and expand their competencies and opportunities in life.
Inconclusion: As you can see, all of these organisations have a common thing the desire to help others and contribute to society. But keep in mind that these are only teh most popular NGOs that we wanted to share with you, while there are many more others in Lithuania!
