Spanish Institute of Oceanography introduces the LanderPick system for deploying and recovering lightweight oceanographic landers efficiently. Overcoming the drawbacks of traditional landers, this system offers cost-effectiveness and precision in locating deep-sea habitats like coral reefs. Operable from mid-sized vessels, it allows for simultaneous deployment of multiple landers for enhanced monitoring. Contact Cesar Pola for more information and watch the demonstrative video online.

  3. Landers: modular structures equipped with sensors which are positioned directly on the seabed to operate autonomously for a defined timeframe. Main drawback: Deployment and picking- up system. Options are: surface buoy, release of a ballast, pop-up buoy, divers/ROVs. All expensive or not suitable for mid-long term. This prevents the use of fleets of landers.

  4. LanderPick: A Remotely Operated Trawled Vehicle (ROTV) to deploy and recover lightweight oceanographic landers provided with a recapture mesh but not recovery elements (buoyancy, ballast etc). Pilot experiments with different types of landers carried out in southern Biscay MPAs in 2021.

  5. The LanderPick system viability and cost- effectiveness tested. Can be operated from regional mid-sized vessels equipped with standard cables. Allows to conceive (i) monitoring systems based on the simultaneous deployment of several landers with a contained cost and (ii) experiments associated with deep habitats such as coral reefs in which it is necessary to locate landers with great precision.
