  2. WHAT IS A YOUNG CARER? A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who looks after someone in their family because they are ill, disabled, has a mental health issue or drug or alcohol addiction

  3. Lucy is 15 years old and lives with a parent who struggles to cope with depression. She lives locally, public transport isn't great and she often feels isolated and trapped at home. Being at home with a parent suffering from a mental health illness means that Lucy sometimes feels overwhelmed and unable to cope. The Young Carer Support Service helps Lucy to access activities and support group by providing transport. Lucy also gets to meet a support worker regularly to ensure she gets the support she needs.

  4. Alex is 13 years old who lives in Livingston with his mum. They live together as a single parent family who get by on a very low income. Alex provides care for his mum who had a physical disability and suffers from periods of depression. Alex is supported by the Young Carer Support Service in West Lothian. He comes to a group and attends regularly. In addition to this he has a befriender who he meets every 2 weeks. Alex loves to come to the group every week to meet his friends he has made here and to get some time away from home.

  8. In school what does this mean? If we know that you are a Young carer we are able to support you when you need it or want it. This might include someone as a point of contact to talk to time out if you need it someone to get information for you if you need it help with schoolwork
