  4. Y Youn oung g S1 Car S1 Carer Success criteria ers s I can work in a pair to make up a definition for a young carer . I can contribute to a discussion on the impact an illness or disability can have on a family.

  5. Y Youn oung g S1 Car S1 Carer Task 1: Definitions ers s Definitions are not always helpful. They can sometimes be seen as a label , but sometimes they help us to ensure everyone gets the support they need. Pair task Using the notes you took from the video in the starter, come up with a definition of a young carer in your pair. Share these definitions with the class.

  6. Y Youn oung g S1 Car S1 Carer ers s What is a young carer? A Young Carer is a name that means a child or young person who looks after, or helps to look after, someone in their family who: is physically ill has mental health issues has a disability has a drug or alcohol dependency.

  7. Y Youn oung g S1 Car S1 Carer ers s Who are young carers? Anyone can become a young carer at any time. Caring can go up and down people can be fine sometimes but need a lot of care at other times. Sometimes you might be helping to look after someone but not think you are a Young Carer but you can still get help. Even if you re not a young carer, you can help other young carers by being a good friend.

  8. Y Youn oung g S1 Car S1 Carer Task 2: What do young carers do? ers s In your groups, come up with a list of tasks you think a young carer might do on a day-to-day basis and write them on the flipchart paper. There were some clues in the video clip at the start.

  9. Y Youn oung g S1 Car S1 Carer A day in the life ers s 7am Get myself up, washed and dressed. 3.30pm Leave school. Collect sister and head home. Get her changed and started on homework. 7.20am Help mum get out of bed and get washed, dressed and downstairs. 4.00pm Helper leaves, sort out and put on laundry, write shopping list. 7.50am Get little sister up, check she is washed and dressed. 4.15pm Go to the shops. Arrive back and hang out washing. Start preparing dinner with some help from mum. 8.00am 5.30pm Dish up and eat tea, wash up with help from sister. Mum will check her homework, I get her bag and uniform ready for tomorrow. Get everyone s breakfast ready and make sure my sister eats hers. Clear up and feed the cat. 8.30am 6.30pm Play a game with mum and sister, get sister ready for and off to bed. Feed the cat. Mum s helper arrives, check she has everything she needs. 8.40am Make sure I have everything for school and my sister does too. Leave for school. 7.30pm Take washing in. Try to do homework while keeping mum company. 9.00am Drop sister off first and then arrive at school go to classes, get given a few pieces of homework, think about when I will be able to fit it in. Think about all the things I have to do at home and how mum is doing. Listen to friends making plans for tonight. 9.00pm Get mum upstairs and into bed. Make her a cup of tea. Sort out the washing, put away what I can and leave out the rest for the helper to iron tomorrow. Get my school bag and uniform organised. Got to bed exhausted at 10.30pm.

A Young Carer may be helping in lots of ways, such as: Housework, shopping and cooking Looking after younger brothers or sisters/taking them to school Helping someone get washed or dressed or move around Listening to someone s problems/keeping them company Helping someone take their medication Going to hospital and doctors visits with them Paying household bills

Missing school Being late for school Feeling very tired or falling asleep in class Not being able to concentrate at school Not being able to get homework or coursework done Can t join in activities after school or go out much Bullying Hard to make friends Feeling really worried, frightened, angry or sad

Y Youn oung g S1 Car S1 Carer ers s Good things about being a Young Carer Feeling close to your family Feeling proud because you are helping your family Feeling safe because you know you are doing a good job looking after your family Learning lots of things that will help when you are grown up Getting to spend lots of time with the people you love
