What is Measurement? Uses numbers to describe objects and events. Metrology-is the study of measurement Why do we need a standardized method of measurement?
Common System of Measurement Metric System Base 10 system created by Gabriel Mouton in 1670. 1790 France pushed for common measurement Most Countries in the World use only this system Customary System Primarily used by the US. Inches, ounces, miles, etc.
SI units International system of units SI-comes from French Systeme International d unites. Seven Basic Units. Meter Second Kelvin Kilogram Mole Ampere Candela
Prefix Abbreviation # of Base unit to make the other prefixes Example Kilo k 1,000 Kilometer km Hecto h 100 Hectometer hm Deka da 10 Dekameter dam Base Unit meter, gram, liter, second b m, g, l, s 1 Meter m; Gram g; Liter l; Second s Deci d 0.1 Decimeter dm Centi c 0.01 Centimeter cm Milli m 0.001 Millimeter mm
Length The basic unit for length is the meter Use rulers and meter sticks to measure length 1 meter = 3.28 feet
Mass The basic unit for mass is the Kilogram Use a balance or scale to find mass
Temperature The basic unit for temperature is either Celsius or Kelvin Use a thermometer

Time The basic unit of time is seconds
Converting Metric to Metric If you are going from a smaller unit to a larger unit, you divide, or move your decimal point to the left.
