Space weather, such as solar flares and geomagnetic storms, can have significant effects on humans and various technologies. These events result in disruptions to power grids, satellite operations, and even impact aviation and global positioning systems. Awareness of space weather is crucial for preparedness and ensuring safety across different sectors.

  1. Effects of Space Weather on Humans

  2. What is Space Weather? Auroras rains from space, that are energetic particles associated with storms or sub storms. Ionosphere or thermosphere plasma density disturbances or destruction. Magnetic storms (hurricanes or tornados) in space which are long-lasting geomagnetic disturbances.

  4. What Causes Space Weather Incidents? Space weather incidents are caused by:- Solar flare or coronal mass ejection - During a solar flare, the x-ray irradiance can increase by several orders of magnitude in just a few minutes. Photo Courtesy: NOAA

  5. Continued Magnetic field can affect space weather:- Magnetosphere Created by Earth s magnetic field, the solar wind can trap and deform the protons and electrons in the magnetic field line. Photo Courtesy: NOAA. Pic showing solar wind density & speed.

  6. Continued Ionosphere can effect space weather as well:- Ionosphere It is the layer of electrons at the top of the Earth s atmosphere. It is strongly affected by the changes in the magnetosphere. When Ionosphere electrons and protons collide with the Earth s atmosphere, they produce aurora. Photo Courtesy: NASA. Pic showing beautiful green aurora.

  8. Why We Care About Space Weather? Space weather effects us in many ways and it is important that we are aware of these effects so we can prepare in whatever way for our safety and health. Here are some of the ways space weather effects us:- Space Operations Aviation Global Positioning System (GPS) Power Grids Technology Satellite Operations

  9. Example: Effects on Power Lines Lets see how space weather can effect our power lines:- Geomagnetic storms can cause blackouts as they can induce currants that flow through man made structure like railroads, power transmission lines, and pipelines. For e.g. on Oct. 30, 2003, a geomagnetic storm caused a power failure in Sweden, and on March 13, 1989, six million people lost power when a geomagnetic storm caused a power grid failure in Quebec, Ontario.

  13. Example: Effects on Space Exploration Lets see how space weather effects our space exploration:- Geomagnetic storms due to high radiation particles, can damage an astronaut s DNA, which in turn can cause cancer and such diseases. This is why NASA monitors astronaut s radiation exposure closely. Aviation Geomagnetic storms can alter the shape of Earth s magnetosphere, which means more exposure to damaging radiation for high flying planes and causing rerouting to airplanes. Satelite Operations Geomagnetic storms effect radio frequency as they travel between satellite and ground operations. They also effect GPS systems, satellite televisions and car radios.
