  1. Promotion and Tenure at NMU PRESENTED BY GABE LOGAN

  2. A word on Working without a Contract: Use the 2020-2021 Master Agreement. Specifically Article V pp.31-36 ARTICLE V FACULTY PERSONNEL POLICIES

  3. Tenure Requirements: (5.4.3.1) Rank of Assistant Professor or higher US citizen or permanent resident Probationary period not exceeding 7 years. Normally apply after 5 years, i.e. fall of 6th year. Starts at appointment date unless prior service credit granted. Extension requests for illness or family care approved by dept. head, dean, PVPAA (5.5.3.2)

  4. Tenure (cont.) Prior Service Credit (5.5.3.1) Specified in letter of appointment. Can be modified once during first two years. Must include prior service years in evaluation Applies only to tenure.

  5. Judgmental Criteria Teaching and Assigned Responsibilities Scholarship and/or Professional Development (see department bylaws for relative amounts) 1. 2. 4 forms of Scholarship: discovery, integration, application and teaching - Peer review is expected (according to department bylaws) - Professional development activities specified in department bylaws Service at all levels (defined in department bylaws) - 3. (Relative emphasis on scholarship and/or professional development versus service is stated in letter of appointment.)

  6. Promotion: Eligibility (5.5.5) Assistant professor Earned doctorate or terminal qualifications specified in bylaws Associate Professor Earned doctorate and 5 years higher ed. experience at Instructor level or higher. Professor Earned doctorate and 11 years experience at instructor level or higher, or 5 years at rank of associate professor

  7. The Document Demonstrate that you have met the criteria specified in bylaws and annual evaluations For tenure, evaluation should include years of prior service For promotion, include years since first hired or since last promotion. Evaluation period ends the day before the first day of classes.

  8. The Document (cont.) In addition to judgmental criteria, evaluation is based on expectations and goals stated in letter of appointment, department bylaws, previous evaluations. Effectiveness in the three judgmental areas. Part II (Faculty Evaluation report) (5.4.6.2), 25-page max of promotion or tenure. Appendix to part II: 80 pages max. Documentation to support your narrative (Part II). Back up materials: evaluations for prior years, manuscripts, reports, artwork, etc.

  9. The Process (5.5.8) Turn in to dept personnel committee and dept head on October 1 University Level FRC: Faculty Review committee Provost College level College advisory committee Dean Dept Level Dept eval committee Dept head

  10. Promotion and Tenure Annual Evaluations are basis for Promotion and tenure. When to Apply (5.4.1)? Tenure no early tenure - apply when you have met requirements - latest is beginning of 6th year CCS at beginning of 6th year in same department Promotion Assoc. Prof. after 5 years in rank - Prof after 11 yrs in rank (or 5 years at Assoc) - or unusual scholarly and/or professional achievement

  11. Evaluation Period (5.4.1.1) - Tenure: Since hired, plus years of prior service credit. (prior service only applies to tenure) - Promotion: Since hired at NMU (for Assoc. Prof.) Since last promotion (for Prof.) Also, years in rank at other schools if not evaluated at NMU previously - Ends day before start of fall semester

  12. Based on cumulative record (5.4.6.7) of - Assigned Responsibilities What do your students think? What do your colleagues think? What did your students learn? - Service Department University Discipline - Scholarship and/or Professional Development Discovery Integration ***Peer-review*** Application Teaching - for CCS: only AR, and Departmental Service ( include other if you have it)

  13. Primary Area always teaching Secondary and Tertiary Areas - Scholarship and/or Professional Development or Service specified in letter of appointment at discretion of faculty, department head, and dean after tenure - everyone needs to do all three; more of secondary than tertiary

  14. 5.4.6.2 - Demonstrated in: - 25 pg narrative - 80 page appendix - unlimited backup materials - no additions after application leaves Department, unless requested by review committees - faculty member s responsibility to make case - explain how you meet requirements - Don t make evaluators try to find evidence

  15. Contingent Faculty Rank 5.3.5 - No review outside of department Recommendation from department faculty goes to Department Head, then Dean

  16. 5.4.6.6. Recommendations for tenure and/or promotion shall be forwarded as described in sections 5.5.8 and 5.5.9 of the Master Agreement with separate statements or arguments for tenure and/or promotion. Don t need separate 25 page narratives that are 98% identical. Check bylaws for your department and refer to them.

  17. Six Levels of Evaluation (5.5.8) Department Faculty personnel committee and Department Head (1&2) Give to both October 1 independent evaluation College Advisory Committee (3) Dean (4) FRC (5) Provost decision due by April 8 (6)

  18. Appeals (5.5.10) Will not go to next level unless appealed (except single negative recommendation in dept) Appeal must be filed within 14 calendar days after receiving certified letter CAC, Dean, and FRC can overturn only based on evidence relative to judgmental criteria in 5.5.6 Provost can overturn only for serious and compelling reasons
