GLOBE Scholars Program Overview PROGRAM GOAL: To increase engineering undergraduate international industry/institution or research experience as well as to increase awareness and understanding of issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) around the globe. ELIGIBILITY: College of Engineering undergraduates in good academic standing, with a priority given to those who are receiving financial aid, have never been outside of the United States, and are traveling to a culture and/or country with which they are unfamiliar. Corporate or Academic Internship must have support from a faculty member. DEI Study must also be approved. PROGRAM START: Fall 2019 Application process for Summer 2020 (Future semester

GLOBE Scholars Program DE&I Project While selecting an internship location, students must also identify an under-represented or economically disenfranchised community to learn about to report on in a follow-up poster session upon their return to UC Berkeley. The project should involve academic research as well as actual engagement with the community. Guidance will be available to assist in reviewing the feasibility of conducting the project.

  4. GLOBE Scholars Program Eligibility/Approvals Guidelines: The internship must show potential for the advancement of research or the promotion of academic success. Must have an orientation toward academic or professional development Must have direct relationship to the individual's declared major, field of study, or current course load Requires the support of a UC faculty member (review and signed approval) Applications: Must demonstrate clarity of goals and thoroughness of planning. Student projects and internships must adhere to University policies, campus regulations, and established procedures Must provide a detailed budget to support the need for funding. Must include information on attempts for or expected additional and/or alternative funding. DE&I projects must ensure project prevents exclusion or alienation of any community.

  5. Disqualifications Proposals submitted less than three months before the start of the event/activity. No retroactive applications will be accepted. Funding will not be accepted for: Stipends or salaries. Events or Alcohol Academic course operation expenses, including texts and readers. GLOBE will not provide funding for expenses related to academic courses. Projects designed to raise funds for off-campus agencies. GLOBE will not provide funding for events/activities/projects in which revenue is being given to a non- campus entity or nonprofit organization. Graduate school tours.

  6. Internships Industrial or institutional internships can be paid or unpaid. They must have a clear objective and plan and proof of internship offer (letter from company/institution/professor). Academic internships can be independent or as part of a summer or semester of study (e.g., an internship arranged by or in conjunction with a study abroad). Internships that require a fee or are arranged by a company that requires a fee to arrange are not eligible.

  7. Process Timeline Submissions: First Round (Google Form Application), November 15, 2019 (Intent to Apply) Second Round, February 14, 2020 (Final Application) Submission to: globescholars@berkeley.edu

  8. Budget and Fund Use Provide budget (include funding from internship provider, scholarships, awards, family or other resources). Funds can be used towards flights & cost of living.
