  6. What does Morton say? Short summary: James C. Morton s article A Tough Approach That Might Work argues that peple who commit petty crime caused by addiction should be punished, but the punishment should include mandatory treatment as part of prison sentencing. Longer summary would add: He argues that people with substance use issues who commit petty crimes to support addiction do so to avoid the serious illness of withdrawal, a medical issue, not because they want to steal. People who commit repeat petty crime caused by addiction are not deterred with short prison sentences, because the need to avoid the illness is too strong. Morton says people need money and willpower to fight addiction. To solve the problem, and avoid what he calls a revolving door prison system, Morton argues the legal system and public health system need to work together.

  7. Rat Park Watch the Rat Park video together What does the Rat park video argue? How is the Rat Park argument similar to Morton s argument? How is the Rat Park argument different from Morton s argument?

  8. Zoom poll: Do you agree more with Morton or Rat Park? Morton: people who commit petty crime due to addiction should be punished, and the punishment should include mandatory treatment as part of prison sentencing Rat Park: addiction is caused by disconnection. Our whole society is the cause of addiction. We need to create a better more connected society to heal addiction.
