National 5 English Overview and Exam Details
This overview provides information on the National 5 English course, including exam components, internal units, exam papers, writing folio requirements, and important dates and deadlines for submission. Introduction to National 5 English
Overview of Course Exam (2 parts) - worth 70% or final grade Writing Folio (2 pieces) - worth 30 % of final grade 2 Units which must be passed during term time: Creation and Production - talking and writing Analysis and Evaluation - reading and listening
Internal Units to Pass (May - Mar) Analysis and Evaluation Listening - you will be given a clip to watch and questions to answer. Reading - a Nat 5 level close reading passage with questions. Creation and Production Talking - you will have to perform a solo talk or group discussion. Solo talks must be at least 3 minutes long. Group discussions must be at least 10 minutes long and each person must contribute significantly. Writing - if one of your writing folio pieces passes first time it can be used for this assessment. If not, you will need to do a new piece.
Exam paper 1 (RUAE) Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (1 hour 30 mins) You will be given a non-fiction newspaper article and a set of questions to complete. The questions will be test your ability to put things in your own words and also to analyse word choice, imagery, sentence structure and tone.
Exam paper 2 (Critical Reading) Critical Reading (2 parts) I hour 30 mins The Scottish Texts part will contain a section from a text you have studied in class and questions about that section and the rest of the text. The Critical Essay part asks you to choose an essay question and write an essay on another text you have studied.
Writing Folio 2 pieces: 1 of the Imaginative Genre (Creative or Personal) 1 of the Discursive Genre (Persuasive or Argumentative) Pieces have to: make use of the techniques of that genre contain varied and more challenging language/vocabulary be technically accurate (punctuation/grammar mistakes)
Dates and deadlines Plans for both folio pieces due June 23rd First official drafts of folio pieces due August 15th (first day back) November (exact date TBC) National 5 Prelim Final submission of Writing Folio pieces to SQA March (exact date TBC) May 2017 (date TBC) 9am - 11:50pm National 5 Exam
Class Rules No swearing. Arrive on time and come to class prepared. (Bring equipment, go to the toilet ) No food or drinks (only water). Especially no chewing gum. Don t talk over me or others. Don t shout out answers - unless asked by the teacher. Always raise your hand. Absolutely no phones out in class unless told to use them. They will go to prison and won t be returned until the end of the class. Do not insult other members of the class. (race, religion, looks ) Do not throw anything. Do not write on the desks, walls, radiators Wear full uniform - must be wearing ties.
Phone Policy Phones should be kept off or on silent at all times during lessons. They should be kept in bags - not pockets or under the desk If you are found to be looking at your phone during class, you will have one warning and then it will be confiscated and kept until the end of the lesson. A referral to the PT will also be entered on SEEMIS. You are then responsible for collecting it at the end of the lesson.
Homework Homework will be recorded in your homework diaries and on the board at the front of the room. As you are normally given a few days to complete homework, there is no excuse for not doing it. If you know you have clubs or other engagements after school, you must find time to do it at lunch or during Personal Support. If you are struggling with the homework, you must tell me ASAP so that I can offer more help. You can t turn up on the day saying you didn t do it because you didn t understand. You are given one FREE PASS for forgetting homework per term. If you forget it a second time, you will be expected to attend a detention at lunchtime where you will either complete the homework or be given extra Nat 5 coursework.
Some suggestions Bring a ring binder to class next week to keep here and store your Nat 5 notes in. You will not be getting jotters - only A4 lined paper. Buy your own copy of the books studied. They are about 3 on Amazon. This will allow you to underline quotes and write notes as we go. You can also keep this when I collect the text back in a few weeks before the exam. If you don't buy your own and are assigned a text to take home, you will be given a particular number of book. This exact copy must be returned in April in the same condition you borrowed it in. If not, you will be asked to buy a new copy. If unsure about an aspect of the course, come to supported study ASAP. Don t leave it until the last minute as exam time is when I m most busy. I run supported study one day after school every week. Use the class website for any materials we look at in class or for revision aids.
