My Back Ground High School thrower without a coach at a D1 school Didn t throw in college as I played football Big Mistake! Was asked to coach the throws in fall of 97 Have coached for this my 23rdyear I truly enjoy working with athletes Enjoy watching my athletes mature and move on P.S. its Field and Track in my book, but lets keep that in our room
Goals for Today Why the Glide is still important? This is geared for someone who is new to the throws Keep in Mind the long Term Goal Make sure the Athletes have fun/success and improve as an Athlete My Goal Help Athletes throw as far as they can Its not about ME! I also hope you are able to take one item away from todays presentation!
Why the Glide Still Matters It is a less complex option than rotational Ability to be consistent in competition Also better able to implement during our high school season For coaches with gray hair, like me, that was what we were taught/coached Its something we are comfortable with Also athletes ability may necessitate this option
Important Concepts Slow to Fast Push the shot, not pull it Separation of hips and shoulders Keep it Linear
The Grip Shot stays on base of the fingers not Palm of the hand Wide or Narrow Finger Thumb is underneath
Placement of Shot Pressed into the Neck Normally lower on the neck than spinners Elbow is at roughly 90 degree angle
Power Position/Stand Throw Toe-Instep alignment Right side rotates into the throw hip, knee, foot, shoulder, ball Stance can be a bit wider than shoulder width apart Jump Left side is posted Center of Gravity over right side Right side lifts/rotates up and over the post Shoulders level and parallel - Height Keep feet on the ground as long as possible Hips and shoulders are separated create a stretch reflex
How do we get across the Ring Several Ways to get to Power Position Shuffle Step Back Alternating Steps Walking Glide Actual Glide
Shuffle Need to keep left arm and shoulder closed until left foot touch down I try to have the athletes follow a rhythm using this technique
Step Back Stay Low and explosive Again keep Rhythm in the equation
The Glide Its not a Hop Hopping causes you to crash on right leg Hopping makes the shot go up & down, not Linear
Back of the Ring Unseating and left leg are key Need to land in an effective Power Position Flat Right Foot Left arm long and relaxed Slight bend in rt. Leg Left leg is long
Time to Move Linearly Left leg moves to right knee don t cross Eyes and head are looking back beyond ring Unseat the hips Keep upper body angle unchanged Right leg drives off flat foot, heal last Don t rise up while moving to middle Weight stays over right leg Goal is to land on ball of foot under shoulders Left Arm long
We are now in the Middle Landed on ball or right foot with rt heel off the ground Right foot should be under shoulders When pulling right foot to the middle, you need to rotate it Right knee over right big toe Hips, shoulders, head facing back of the ring
Mission Control, we are cleared for take off As soon as left foot contacts the ground, right side rotates into the throw hip, knee, foot and shoulder Left side is firm Right side lifts/rotates up and over the posted left side Keep feet on the ground as long as possible
So what about the Reverse? I do not teach it My first year, I taught the reverse and we never finished a throw When an athlete generates enough force I will then show them the reverse

Throwing Progression Start with soft ball or squish ball then progress to shot Single Leg Throws Power Position with cup or water bottle Arm strike into the ground Seated throws PVC on hips Kneeling throws Long A drills Standing throws feet front Chair Glides Standing throws with quarter turn Glide over towels Reverse C drills
Still Progressing Box Drills 4 way Belt glides Step down Glide up and incline Step down and hold position Other drills Step down and glide Tennis ball on heel of shoe Step down and double glide PVC Glides to power position PVC Glides with press Glide to power position and stop Finish the throw
