Review: Marvin the Marvellous and the Singer in a Talent Show
An amazing magician, Marvin the Marvellous, wows the audience with his magic tricks while the singer struggles to hit the right notes. Marvin impresses with his bold performance, leaving the audience in awe. On the other hand, the singer's out-of-tune rendition of a Whitney Houston classic falls flat, disappointing the judges and audience alike.

Write a review/ recount for an act in a talent show This week , we are inviting you to imagine that you have watched a talent show consisting of performances of variable quality: some were good and some were terrible. Your task is to write a review (which is also a recount) of one of the acts for the school website. Over the next few pages, we have provided you with some examples of acts to help you to generate your own ideas. Your review does not have to be based on one of the acts we ve illustrated. We want you to be creative and to use your imagination. You might want to have a look at the videos (links on the next page) of real acts from real talent shows. You don t need to review these acts , just use them to help you to gather ideas for: Types of acts Stage name / name of the act Background information about the performers, including : name/ age / occupation / where they re from / who they ve brought with them today Performers body language and comments before and after they ve performed Judges comments and reactions Audience reaction Performers reactions

An amazing magician Marvin the Marvellous Timidly walks onto stage Judges ask him about himself Shoulders slumped, making no eye contact, he whispers his answers They wish him luck Music starts and Marvin s body language is now bold and confident Pulls a real rabbit out of a hat Puts rabbit back into hat and makes it disappear Asks members of the audience to pick a card Marvin guesses all of the cards He shows one of the judges a book with 500 pages Asks the judge to pick a page and not to show him Then asks the judge to pick a line on that page Finally asks judge to pick a word on that line Tells Judge that he will now show him the word, but to write it on a board and show the audience Marvin rummages in his trouser pocket , pulls out a piece of paper, opens it with a flourish and shows it to the audience Everyone gasps because it is the word that the judge had picked Audience applaud and cheer for more
A singer who sang out of tune Strides confidently onto stage Introduces herself and says that she s here to win Judges wish her luck Silence as music begins : slow, gentle introduction for Whitney Houston classic I will always love you Audience all looking excited at the prospect of such a big song It was obvious that the audience were thinking that she must be really good to have chosen such a difficult song Singer sings first 3 words of song Sounds like a cat being strangled Audience gasp in shock ; some cover their ears as the song progresses Judges eyes widen in horror One judge is desperately trying not to laugh Silence when song finishes ; literally could hear a pin drop Judges are gentle in giving really negative feedback Singer argues with them, tells them that they don t know what they re talking about and storms off stage
Other ideas could include: A group of clumsy gymnasts An incredible juggler who juggles with an assortment of amazing items
PLANNING FOR YOUR WRITING Create a mind map to help you to collect and organise lots of ideas for your act. Who has come with them today? real name, age, where they are from What is the act? How long have they been doing it? Name of act: occupation / What will they do with the prize money if they win? which school do they attend? Why have they entered the competition? Do they think they can win?

You ll find great examples of body language , judges comments and audience reaction online see the video links that we ve given you. Everyone who knows me says I m the best. music starts loud with heavy bass Steven raises his hand above his head and starts to clap. He gestures to the audience to join him. Some do ; most don t. He starts spinning and falls over. Audience gasp and laugh. He gets up and continues: stomping his feet, criss-crossing his feet, wiggling his hips not any of it in time to the music Act finishes and he takes numerous bows totally oblivious to the judges and audience s reactions. Laughing Covering their faces with their hands Shaking their heads Shouting Off! Off! Off! Gasping when he falls Silence when he finishes with a smattering of claps Laughing Covering their faces with their hands Shaking their heads One judge presses their buzzer to try to stop him Polite clapping when he finishes Don t give up the day job. What on Earth was that? Thanks for coming, but I m not sure how to tell you this it wasn t great.
Heres an example of a review / recount of a talent show act: Yesterday evening, the They ve Got Talent 2020 competition kicked off with a bang in the beautiful surroundings of The London Palladium. There were 20 acts: some good ones, some bad ones. But only one really stood out for me : Stardom. The band consisted of 4 strikingly handsome young men all dressed in white t-shirts and shredded denim jeans. They strode across the stage , hi-fiving each other, heads held high and grinning madly as if they had already won. Many of the teenage girls in the audience were cheering, clapping and stamping their feet. When he realised that they weren t going to stop anytime soon, Cimon Showell, head judge (A.K.A. Mr Mean), put his hand up in the air to demand silence. When David Balliams asked the group to introduce themselves, a young man with long dark hair that covered half his face, stepped forward. My name is Josh and this is Nate, Ali and Naz. He paused dramatically and grinned before saying, And together, we are Stardom! They had the looks to be the next big boy band, but I wondered if they had the talent.
Naz told the audience how the boys had all known each other since primary school and that they d formed the band last year. Nate chipped in and told us that they were here to win. David wished them luck. There was silence in the auditorium as the audience awaited what they thought was the treat to come. The music started: an upbeat piece with some heavy bass. The audience and judges were smiling and tapping their feet. Then Stardom started to sing . IT WAS AWFUL! They sang out of tune and out of time, gasping for breath at the end of every line. Members of the audience were covering their ears, shaking their heads, even pinching themselves. Above the din, I heard one member of the audience say: Do you think they have any idea how bad they are? No, obviously not! came the reply, as Stardom continued with this special brand of torture. When the boys finally finished, groans and boos erupted from the audience. The boys were stunned when the sound of all three buzzers hit their tone deaf ears. After some rather harsh words from the judges, which included Cimon saying, On behalf of the people of Great Britain, it s a resounding Never! , Ali asked if they could have one more chance and sing one more song. Alysa Crixon told them , Not in this lifetime boys. Stardom shuffled off the stage with their heads down. They certainly weren t grinning any more.
You were unbelievable! You were amazing! I was not expecting that! What! Wow Miss Thing! You are a little diva! Was that really you singing? Was there someone behind the stage? That s not you singing. Somebody is behind you, behind the scenes. Are you really only 13? I was not expecting that! A star is born. I want to buy your music right now. You have soul. Amazing. You re absolutely amazing. That s the best singing we ve heard all day. JUDGES QUOTES I can honestly tell you by a clear mile, that you are the worst contestant / singer we ve ever had on Britain s Got Talent. You re so bad, you re brilliant. I could listen to you all day. You are pants and it s a no! ______ on behalf of Great Britain, it is a resounding Never! .
