Sadaos meeting with the General After treating the old General who was in great pain, Sadao told him about the American soldier in detail. He told him that he didn t care for the American but since he had operated on him with great success, he wanted to hand him over to the authorities. The General sighed and agreed that the American had to be taken out. He promised Sadao that he would sent private assassins who would even remove the dead boy quietly. Sadao was very much relieved.
Anxious moments Sadao didn t even let Hana know of the assassins fearing that she would not agree to such killers in their home. He didn t sleep for three nights waiting for assassins. He was restless and jumped at the slightest sound. Hana knew that something was wrong but he wouldn t tell her. Each morning, the American looked hale and hearty and even talked to him happily. Clearly the assassins had not come to the house.
Escape of the prisoner Sadao decided he couldn t bear one more night of suspense awaiting the assassins. The American looked healthy enough to move out into the sea. Sadao arranged a boat with necessary things like quilt, water, food and a torch. He sent him away him the boat at night with the instruction that he could live on fresh fish and no fire should be made on the island. He was to await Korean fishing boat from the uninhabited island to make his escape.
Escape of the prisoner If he needed anything or he was still there, he was to flash out the torch light at twilight of the day. There was no flash signal the next day and he knew that the white man had made his escape. The next day all the servants returned to the house.
Sadaos final meeting with the General The General was operated on and was recovering well. Sadao informed him that the white man had escaped from his house. The General was suddenly afraid and apologized for failing to send the assassins. He explained that he had forgotten to send them as he was in deep pain. He also reminded Sadao about his patriotism. Sadao was convinced that the matter was closed once for all as the General himself was at fault.
