  2. Reaction of the servants They were very unhappy and angry seeing the white man there. They did not care even though he was dying. They murmured among themselves and felt it was a big mistake on the part of their master. Yumi who nursed the little baby refused to wash the white man s body before surgery. Hana managed to wash and scrub him thoroughly even though she hated it.

  3. Surgery Dr. Sadao was not interested it operating the enemy soldier but felt it was his duty to save a human life. He asked Hana to give the anesthetic though she had never given one earlier. As he opened the wound, there was so much of blood that Hana began retching. She managed to give the anesthetic and Sadao completed the surgery.

  4. Surgery When the white man regained sense, he was surprised to hear Hana speaking English. Sadao checked on him two three times a day and was kind to the patient though he spoke to him little. 5. Servants leaving Sadaos house The servants were disgruntled and angry that the Master and Mistress kept an American enemy soldier at their home and treated him where as he should have been either handed over or informed to the police. Unable to bear their fear that they as well as their Master would be in a great danger if the authorities found out that there was an enemy sheltered at their home, they packed their belongings and quietly left after Hana paid them. Her pride as a Mistress did not allow her to request them to stay back.

  6. Messenger from the General Hana was shocked to see the official messenger at their doorstep. She was almost certain that he had come to arrest Sadao after the servants had informed the authorities about the enemy soldier. Both Hana and Sadao were relieved to hear that Sadao was wanted by the old General who was in great pain. Sadao decided then and there that he had to get rid of the enemy soldier at the earliest.
