Understanding Energy Performance Index for Commercial Buildings

Energy Performance Index (EPI) is a key metric used to evaluate the energy efficiency of commercial buildings. It is calculated based on the annual grid electricity consumption, annual DG electricity consumption, and the built-up area of the building. Various studies and ratings such as ECO-III Benchmarking, IGBC ratings, and BEE star ratings provide benchmarks for different types of commercial buildings. The EPI values indicate the energy efficiency levels of buildings, with lower values representing better performance. Additionally, the EPI can help in determining eligibility for BEE star ratings and assess the energy usage of different building types.

  13. Green rating may not be sufficient to ensure energy efficiency in the buildings Need for absolute benchmarking for energy performance Type of building Performance indicator (AAhEPI OR EPI) Start with high energy performance benchmarks (e.g. BEE 5-star rating OR best energy efficient buildings)
