UCLA Medical Aid Initiative: Reducing Medical Waste
The Medical Aid Initiative (MAI) is a student-initiated and student-run program at UCLA focused on reducing medical waste in the healthcare system. FA CT OBJECTIVES About $765 billion worth of usable medical supplies are wasted each year in the US Toreduce medical waste in the United States and improve healthcare internationally by reallocating donated supplies to organizations traveling out of the country NationalAcademy of Medicine,2012 Sustainability Distribution Awareness Todetermine the extent of the impact that can be made by student-run organizations on the medical waste issue
METHODS 1 2 3 4 5 UCLA- affiliated organizations traveling abroad request specified supplies from the MAI Inventory Unused, unexpired medical supplies from UCLA Health hospitals are donated to Michigan Operations Center warehouse Volunteers sort out expired supplies and sort unexpired supplies intospecific categories Supplies are packed, weighed, and taken internationally foruse Weight and contents of the donation packages arerecorded

Discussion Student-run organizations can have a measurable impact on reducing medical waste,so we hope to help students at other schools start a similar program The program can continue to expand with increasing support from hospital staff and allocation of resources to our cause. GET INVOLVED Lack of attention and resources from the current health system causes many barriers for our expansion. Spread the word about the large amount of medical waste and the importance of sustainabilityin medicine!
