PRIORITIES AND LIKELY TOPICS FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT Priority waste stream is Recyclables and E-waste Collection and Disposal System (includes all the different waste streams) National Guidelines Management and Disposal of different waste streams Legislative Frameworks Single Use Plastic Ban Policy/Regulation/Legislation Container Deposit Legislation (CDL) Economic instruments Recycling Initiatives Support and strengthen the Solomon Islands Recycling Waste Management Association Equipment's and infrastructures

MANAGEMENT OF THE 8 WASTE STREAMS 1.Asbestos There is currently no management system in place for Asbestos, E- Waste, Organic Wastes and Bulky Waste Healthcare waste is managed by Ministry of Health under the National Health Care Waste Policy Recyclables are managed by private recycling companies. Recently established the SIRWMA to support recycling initiatives A Disaster Waste Management Guideline/ Plan will be developed Residual waste is managed by City Councils 2.E-waste 3.Healthcare waste 4.Recyclables 5.Organic Waste 6.Residual Waste 7.Disaster Waste 8.Bulky Waste

CHALLENGES AND LIMITATIONS Absence of appropriate infrastructure , equipment and technology Lack of available land for proper landfill Poor collection system Limited human resources Limited Financial Resources Poor coordination between agencies Non-enforcement Illegal squatters and settlements Population growth and Urbanization

  6. CLARIFICATIONS FOR PWP PMU Process of requesting assistance (funding and technical) from the project Support for Pacwaste National Inception Workshop Support for National Steering Committee Assistance to develop Country Project Design

  7. WAY FORWARD Strengthen waste management system through effective policies , guidelines and regulatory frameworks Support and invest in waste management infrastructure and facility developments (landfills, recycling plants, waste storage and collection facilities) Establish long-term financing mechanisms and economic instruments Invest in Behavioral Change Initiatives
