  5. Why we need to do the work We plan to replace worn out bridge joints to prevent deterioration and extend the service life of the structure. We will improve road markings on the M11 to help reduce the risk of roadside collisions. We plan to improve sections of the carriageway to help limit future repairs (e.g. delivering schemes with 20+ years design life, compared to 5-10 years) All the works on the M11 will help improve safety, assist with smoother traffic flows; and safer and secure bridges. 5
