Case Report of Congenital Anophthalmos in a Newborn
The case report discusses a 5-day-old newborn with congenital anophthalmos, a rare condition characterized by the absence of the eye globe since birth. The patient presented with a deformed right eye and examination revealed a complete absence of ocular tissue in the right eye socket along with normal findings in the left eye. The management plan included counseling for prosthetic eye fixation in the affected eye.

A 5 day old newborn child brought by his mother to ophthalmology OPD as referral from pediatrics with chief complaint of deformed right eye globe formation since birth. No H/O consanguinous marriage. ON EXAMINATION : OS CLINICAL PICTURE OD
OD OS Can t be assessed Pupil reacting to light VISION SLIT LAMP EXAMINATION OD OS normal ANTERIOR SEGMENT can t be assessed normal in size, reacting to light. PUPIL no no Clear. LENS
FUNDUS EXAMINATION [ + 90D LENS ] OD OS Media clear OD-size,shape-normal, margins-distinct, CUP:DISC ratio-0.3:1, VESSELS-normal, FOVEAL REFLEX-present can t be seen B SCAN Complete absence of ocular tissue Normal ocular tissue in orbit
MRI SCAN OD OS Non visualization of globe,agenesis of optic nerve.Hypoplastic extraocular muscles. Globe is normal,optic nerve normal,extraocular muscles normal Management : Patient was counselled and advised for prosthetic eye fixation in deformed eye,RIGHT EYE.
CASE DISCUSSION CONGENITAL ANOPHTHALMOS is absence of globe by birth,rare,caused by failure of optic vesicle to develop. Differential diagnosis Microphthalmos,Cryptophthalmos CONCLUSION In the above discussed case, as there is no globe formation and empty eye socket with no evidence of ocular tissue in right eye, came to a diagnosis of CONGENITAL ANOPHTHALMOS OF RIGHT EYE.
