THE INTERNET!! The Internet is a HUGE, worldwide network that connects all kinds of things together Why connect things? To communicate, of course Games (Xbox to Xbox, Nintendo DS to Nintendo DS) Websites Email Devices that use the Internet come in many shapes and sizes Computers, phones, TVs, and even watches!!
THE INTERNET!! Cyberspace is what you call all of the devices connected to the Internet Some of these devices are connected by BAD people for BAD purposes Some are connected by GOOD people for GOOD purposes How can you tell which is which? ASK A TRUSTED ADULT!! Parent, guardian, teacher
4 Rules for using the Internet safely (Psst check the back of your mask)
The Rules #1: Do not share personal information OK to share: What you like, what you dislike, what games you play, what you think about the website you are using NOT OK to share: Your password, your name, where you live, your phone number, what school you go to If you really, really want to share, ask a trusted adult first
The Rules #2: Use good Netiquette don t be rude online A Scout is Courteous Using the Internet is like being out on Halloween, you do not really know who is who Just because you are using a computer does not mean you can stop behaving nicely When you pick on someone online or you are mean online, it is called Cyber-bullying This can hurt people just like if you said it to them in person What if someone is rude or mean to you? Tell a trusted adult!!
The Rules #3: People you meet online could be anyone, so trust only the ones your parents say are ok. NEVER go meet someone in person that you only know from the Internet The people who want to hurt you the worst will not use a computer to do it they want you to come to them STOP talking to anyone who asks you to do this and get a trusted adult
The Rules #4: Tell a trusted adult if anything makes you feel SAD, UNCOMFORTABLE, CONFUSED or SCARED There are bad things and people on the Internet Bad words or people who say bad words Pictures that are meant to hurt or shock you Things that are untrue Who is a trusted adult? Parent, guardian or teacher Someone who your teachers and parents say is OK Wait am I a trusted adult?? (HINT: Ask your teacher)

The Rules Quiz Time While surfing the Internet, you see a website that makes you feel uncomfortable. What should you do? A. Write down the name and don t go there again. B. Tell your friends, so they can avoid it too. C. Go tell a Trusted Adult (Parent, Guardian, or Teacher). D. Unplug the computer.
The Rules Quiz Time If someone online tells you they are in 6th grade and their name is Katie, they are probably how old? A. 12 B. 13 C. 35 D. There s no way to tell!
The Rules Quiz Time If you have been talking on the Internet to a person for a long time, and they want to meet, which is okay to do? A. Meet them, as long as you bring a friend. B. Meet in a public place, and don t tell anyone. C. Tell someone where you will be before you go. D. Ask your parent or guardian first (and have them go with you if they say it is ok).
The Rules Quiz Time If someone online sends you a message that is mean or makes you feel uncomfortable, you should: A. Erase them from your friends list. B. Delete the message. C. Insult them back (and get em good!!). D. Tell a Trusted Adult.

Bad guys what do they want? Bad guys want to use you to get what they want Some bad guys want money, so they want you to meet so they can kidnap you and ask your parents for money to give you back Some bad guys like to hurt people, and they are too afraid of adults, so they want to hurt kids Some bad guys want to get control of your computer so they can do more bad stuff with it
Bad guys how do you spot them? The best way to tell if someone might be a bad guy is if he or she is asking you to do something that would break one of the 4 rules Some bad guys sound really nice and polite, but if they are asking for personal information or if they tell you to meet them, they are still bad! Bad guys are like leprechauns they will say anything to get you to do what they want
What do you do? This one is easy: ASK A TRUSTED ADULT!! You should stop what you are doing on the computer until an adult can check it Don t hide your activities on the Internet from trusted adults!! Using the Internet is like going to an amusement park you need an adult there to buy your ticket, decide what is safe to ride, and help you if you get in trouble
