  2. Welcome! Hello everyone! We are delighted to welcome you to the School of Psychology & Neuroscience for 2023-2024. Whether you re joining us or returning for another year, this booklet will provide you with information on the school- specific orientation events that are available this year. Orientation Week runs from Monday 4th - Friday 8th September. Visit the main orientation page on the University website here for access to our app containing a wealth of information about orientation and the University in general. Events The School of Psychology & Neuroscience is offering a range of online and in person orientation events this year. We will start the week with social and informal activities to welcome you to the School, while the second part of the week will focus on more formal events that will introduce you to subject/year-specific welcome talks. This booklet provides details of each activity run by the School. On the following pages, each event is listed with full descriptions and links to join online events. Please use the University's online map to get familiar with locations and find our School.

  5. Meet the School President For? When? Where? Who? Everyone! Tuesday 5th September, 11am Old Library Chloe-Anna Hunt Want to know more about what goes on behind the scenes in your school? Come along and meet the 2023-24 School President! As last year s Vice President of the Psychology & Neuroscience Society, Chloe is passionate about supporting student wellbeing and representing the Psychology & Neuroscience community. Learn about how you can get involved in the community at St Andrews and hear about upcoming events and volunteering opportunities. If you re keen to get involved, learn more about having a say in your school, or have any questions about student life, Chloe is the person you re looking for!

  6. MSc Origins of Mind Picnic in the Quad For? When? Where? Who? MSc Origins of Mind Students Tuesday 5th September, 1pm St Mary s Quad Dr Manon Schweinfurth Bring your own food and get to know your classmates and programme coordinator over a picnic in our lovely quad. We will meet in front of the Psychology building (big door on your left when you enter St Mary s Quad from South Street you can t miss it). No clue what food to bring? Here are Manon s hot tips: Dr Noodles on Market Street - noodle bar with fantastic veggie and vegan options CombiniCo on South Street - Korean food with local fish but also great veggie and vegan options Zest on South Street - homemade sandwiches, bagels, and good coffee Not convinced? St Andrews is also home to Pret a Manger, Costa, Tesco, Sainsburys, and more.

  7. Walk and Bark For? When? Where? Who? All students & staff Tuesday 5th September, 2pm Walk on East Sands Dr Stefan Pulver (and Roxy!) Stefan will be accompanying Roxy the dog for her walk along East Sands. Please come along! We will walk with Roxy (and some other pooches) on East Sands and talk informally about MSc programmes and the upcoming year! All students, staff, and their dogs are invited, but bringing a dog is not required. Human and canine participants are encouraged to wear something red (hat, scarf, bandana, collar, etc). If you see a person or dog wearing something red at East Sands at this time, introduce yourself and say hi. Participating dogs will be friendly. Direct contact with dogs is encouraged, but not required. We will meet at The Cheesy Toast Shack at 2pm. Please bring your doggo if you have one!

  8. Psych & Neuro Welcome Party For? When? Where? Who? Everyone! Wednesday 6th September, 2pm Secret Garden (St Mary s Quad) All staff! Come along to meet our staff and your fellow Psychology & Neuroscience students. Get an idea of who s who, match faces to names, and make new friends in the Secret Garden! All years are invited so there s plenty of opportunity to meet your future academic parents and learn about the multitude of research areas of our 3rd, 4th, and PG students. All staff are also invited to attend so you ll be able to say hi to your lecturers and tutors before teaching begins and get to know the professional services teams as well! Feel free to drop in any time between 2-4pm for snacks and drinks.

  9. Neuroscience Honours Welcome Lecture 3rd & 4th Year Neuro Students Thursday 7th September, 9am School 3, St Salvator s Quad Dr Wenchang Li For? When? Where? Who? All 3rd and 4th year Neuroscience students are invited along to discuss the general structure of the neuroscience degree, get information on studying abroad and summer placements, and learn about postgraduate neuroscience study opportunities in St Andrews! With guests to share information on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and career development opportunities, this is the perfect chance to learn about how you can get involved in the upcoming year and about future endeavours in neuroscience.

  10. Neuroscience Sub Honours Welcome Lecture 1st & 2nd Year Neuro Students Thursday 7th September, 11am Psychology Seminar Room 1 Dr Wenchang Li For? When? Where? Who? All 1st and 2nd year Neuroscience students are invited along to discuss the general structure of the neuroscience degree, get information on studying abroad and summer placements, and learn how to get involved with practical skills passports! With guests to share information around student societies, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and career development opportunities, this is the perfect chance to chat about your upcoming year and skill building opportunities in neuroscience!

  11. Psychology 1stYear Welcome Lecture 1st Year Psychology Students Thursday 7th September, 12pm Physics Lecture Theatre A Dr Daniel McKay For? When? Where? Who? Welcome, Future Stars of Psychology! Prepare to delve into the fascinating world of psychology as we extend a warm welcome to our orientation lecture for all first-year students! We will introduce you to the structure of Fundamentals of Psychology 1 and 2, including topic areas, lectures, comprehensive reading lists, and interactive workshops. Meet the School President, hear from our Director of Teaching, acquaint yourself with St Andrew s Nightline, explore the captivating world of MAZE magazine, and engage with our Psychology & Neuroscience Societies.   12. Psychology 2ndYear Welcome Lecture 2nd Year Psychology Students Friday 8th September, 10am Buchanan Lecture Theatre Dr Reiner Sprengelmeyer For? When? Where? Who? All 2nd year Psychology students are invited along to hear an overview of the PS2001 structure. Get information on lectures, practical classes, tutorials, and assessments, as well as more general information about your second year of psychology studies. With a talk from Careers Services, our welcome will set you up for success in your second year and in further studies.

  13. MSc Origins of Mind Online Coffee Break For? When? Where? Who? MSc Origins of Mind Students Friday 8th September, 12pm TEAMS Dr Manon Schweinfurth Can t make the Picnic in St Mary s Quad in person but still keen to get to know your classmates and programme coordinator? Make yourself a nice cuppa and meet your classmates and programme coordinator online while also getting to know Teams a bit more. A great opportunity to ask any course specific (or research-related) questions and get an idea of what the year ahead will look like! Join here!

  14. Psychology 3rdYear Welcome Lecture 3rd Year Psychology Students Friday 8th September, 1pm Buchanan Lecture Theatre Dr Juan-Carlos Gomez For? When? Where? Who? All 3rd Year Psychology students are invited along to learn about the outline of the structure of the Junior Honours course and be provided with resources to access information you ll need in the coming year. This includes specific School resources, information on 4th year projects for when the time comes, advice on study skills, student support and more. With a brief introduction from the Careers Adviser for the School of Psychology & Neuroscience, this is a great opportunity to learn, not only about the year ahead, but about future prospects in Psychology.

  15. Psychology 4thYear Welcome Lecture 4th Year Psychology Students Friday 8th September, 1:30pm Buchanan Lecture Theatre Dr Juan-Carlos Gomez For? When? Where? Who? All 4th Year Psychology students are invited along to learn about the outline of the structure of the Senior Honours course and be provided with resources to access information you ll need in the coming year. This includes specific School resources, information on projects, advice on study skills, student support and more. With a brief introduction from the Careers Adviser for the School of Psychology & Neuroscience, this is a great opportunity to learn, not only about the year ahead, but about future prospects in Psychology.

  16. PGT Welcome For? When? Where? Who? Postgraduate Taught Students Friday 8th September, 4pm Psychology Seminar Room 1 Dr Eric Bowman All taught postgraduate students are invited to hear from the Director of Taught Postgraduate Studies within the School of Psychology & Neuroscience. Join your fellow postgraduate students to learn about the who s who of the PGT programmes and get more information about being a postgraduate within the school.

  17. PGT Social Event For? When? Where? Who? Postgraduate Taught Students Friday 8th September, 5pm Psychology Seminar Room 1 Dr Eric Bowman After the PGT Welcome, there will be a social event in Seminar Room 1 so you can get familiar with friendly faces, meet your fellow postgraduate students, and get to know staff within the school. All taught postgraduate students are invited, even if you can t make the Welcome event beforehand. With snacks and drinks provided, it s the perfect chance to get to know everyone!

  18. Picnic in the Quad For? When? Where? Who? Everyone! Sunday 10th September, 1pm St Mary s Quad Mr Paul Gardner Missed the social events during the week and feeling a bit anxious before teaching weeks begin? Just want to make more friends? Bring a rug, some food, a sense of humour and meet fellow students in our historic St Mary s Quad for a chilled Sunday afternoon! Drop by anytime between 1-4pm. With a friendly face and a brain full of information, Paul will be available to answer your questions and make you feel more at ease before semester really begins.
