Enhancing Collaboration in Vocational Education for Refugee Integration

What was AMAL? An AMIF-funded study-project, which aimed to find out the possibilities of collaboration between Finnish and Iraqi vocational education in order to enhance the Iraqi refugees and asylum seekers to return to Iraq from Finland Project period June 2017 November 2017 The core idea of AMAL = Hope time spent in Finland before voluntary return to Iraq has not been wasted | 1
What did we do in the AMAL project? Four different elements: Questionnaires and interviews of refugees and asylum seekers (n=51) Questionnaires and interviews of the teachers in refugee centers across Finland (n=7) Interview based study on the needs of the working-life in Iraq (n=7) Joint seminar with Finnish and Iraqi stakeholders | 2
Results of the data collection Asylum seekers/ refugees survey showed that one fourth of the respondents would be willing to return to their home country if the situation in the society would stabilize and peace would be achieved results of the survey also pointed out that the respondents felt lack of hope concerning their future long stay at the reception centers without possibility to actively participate in the surrounding society (not having possibility for example to study) makes the persons passive Teachers Education should focus more on general study skills (rather than to Finnish language) ICT-skills education was seen very important Needs of the working life the most important skills that the returnees should have in order for them to find a work place are: IT-skills, English language skills, team working skills, communication skills (so called soft skills) and entrepreneurial skills Diploma / certification is very important | 3
What did we learn? The cooperation needs trust Takes a lot of time The dialogue between the financier and the beneficiary is really essential / vital The willingness of taking this idea further with larger partnership network | 4
