  2. UNIT 5.4 LIFTING AND HANDLING OF MATERIALS Any material listed as a scheduled substance must be handled transported and stored within acceptable practices and procedures. Employees expected to work with these materials must be trained and understand the hazards of the material, including emergency action. Employees must be provided with the correct safety equipment and clothing to minimize the risk of injury and damage.

  3. Physical lifting and handling of materials At work, you should avoid lifting heavy objects without either assistance from others. Bend your knees not your waist. Fetch, don t stretch Work gradually Keep your mind on reality When using a jack or hoist, special training and handling instructions must be followed.

  4. Working with chemicals and hazardous waste Adhere to the proper handling and storage procedures of any chemical substance. Great care must always be exercised when disposing of chemicals down drains . Paint factories have special traps installed in order to protect the sewers. solvents in particular must never be allowed down drains, it can cause an explosion. it is important to handle and dispose of waste correctly as this will help to prevent injury.

  5. UNIT 5.5 Reporting on health and safety issues According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act: Any employer who employs more than twenty employees, must appoint health and safety representatives in writing, within four months. One representatives per hundred employees is needed in shops and offices. Representatives must be full-time employees and know of the conditions and activities of the workplace that he or she is representing. In an organisation, all the health and safety representatives are part of a safety committee that deals with health, safety and environmental quality.

  6. THE FUNCTIONS OF HEALTH AND SAFETY REPRESENTATIVES Identify potential hazards in the workplace and review health and safety procedures Inform the employer about potential hazards Check if safety measures are taken Submit a written report to the safety committee if an accident occurs

  7. INCIDENTS REPORTS Immediate incident report Follow-up incident report Full incident reports An agreed incident report format helps to ensure a quick and effective response to any incident. It provides the essential information in a logical order, allowing managers to make sound decisions. It is important that an incident reports states the facts, that is, states exactly what happened.

  8. A FORMAT FOR AN IMMEDIATE INCIDENT REPORT Who has the incident happened to? When did the incident happen? Where did the incident happen? What exactly has happened? What have you done about it? What help do you need?

  9. A FORMAT FOR A FULL INCIDENT REPORT Full chronological account of the incident Who was involved Reasons for any decisions taken Lessons to learn from the incident Identification of any failure of procedures Date, author, role of author and signature

  10. THE GENERAL FLOW OF REPORTING STARTS WITH THE WORKER OR PERSON IDENTIFYING HEALTH AND SAFETY RELATED MATTERS The immediate supervisor informs the health and safety representative. The health and safety representative reports to the employer. Each person identifying and receiving report must attempt to correct or isolate any threat. If a worker does not report a health and safety issue, this could result to: High costs Loss of time Lives being lost
