Who is Joan Hunter & Why She Accepted Role of District Polio Chair Joan became a Rotarian in 2012 Joan was President of the Ottawa South Rotary Club 3 times Joan is currently a member of the Barrhaven Rotary Club Joan was born in 1951 She was childhood memories of pictures with children in iron lungs She had a close friend in her teenage years who had had polio as a child and was often seen in a wheelchair while others were playing games

  3. October 24, 2023 World Polio Day We need to ramp up our effort to eradicate polio to protect children from this devastating and disabling disease What can we do to engage Clubs in planning for World Polio Day Action What can we do to increase donations to the PolioPlus Fund

  4. What is Polio Polio is a highly infectious disease, mostly affecting young children and can lead to spinal and respiratory paralysis Wild polio occurring in nature Vaccine-derived polio caused by the oral polio vaccine

  5. Current Data As of September 6, 2023 the number of wild polio cases is 7: 2 in Pakistan and 5 in Afghanistan In 2022 the number of cases was 30: 2 in Afghanistan, 20 in Pakistan and 8 in Mozambique In 2021 there were 6 cases: 1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan In 2020 there were 140 cases: 84 in Pakistan and 56 in Afghanistan

  7. Fundraising Races (Run for PolioPlus, Walk for PolioPlus) - organize locally and/or support in the District Money Jars (for Club meetings, family & friends, local businesses) Wine and Cheese events Small dinner parties Bake sales PolioPlus Society ($100 USD per year) for individual donations

Education and Learning Learn about polio - wealth of information on polio and toolkits available on the internet through e.g., Rotary International, WHO, CDC, UNICEF and Gavi, the vaccine alliance Share need to spread the word making polio a subject of conversation within the community (consider going into schools and painting the little finger of children with purple dye to illustrate polio inoculation on mass immunization days Purple4Polio in developing countries) Donate need to seek donations (note matching 2:1 by the Gates Foundation)

History of Rotary and Polio Rotary is a partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative along with: WHO, CDC, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi PolioPlus campaign was launched in 1985 Rotary has helped reduce polio cases by 99.9% (more than 2.5 billion children have been vaccinated since 1988)

  11. We are almost there but We cannot give up A plane ride away (note case in New York State in 2022) Anti-vaxxers World events (climate, conflict, etc and affect on our fundraising for fighting polio)
